For what it is worth, the style is authentic Masai. I saw some Masai tribesmen and women at Walmart yesterday, and they were wearing the $9 version of these very same sandlals.
I think the idea of "barefoot technology" is a field of study that allows for maximum toe exposure while being adequate to allow the wearer to receive service at McDonalds.
Another related Masai factoid you may not know is that "mikkidees" is a Masai word for "place of golden arches."
