Is there any reason that a sheep can't stick around for six or eight months after its last shearing?

Just efficiency: they spend those six or eight months eating. Why go to the expense?

Sheep are just walking lawnmowers; as they trim one area another grows; as long as one has an area as large as the herd there's no extra work.
