My experience regarding learning about evolution and religion in school is different from students in public schools because I spent grade school at St. Joan of Arc Catholic school.
We were taught the scientific principles of evolution in science class and we were taught about the book of Genesis as well as the rest of the Bible in religion class.
There was never any conflict between the two ideas that I can remember, and in fact, I remember being taught that evolution was the scientific explanation for the diversity of species on Earth and that it was the method that God used to get us where we are today.
We were also taught that much of the Bible is meant to be understood at a higher level than the sum of its words and to take away from it only its literal meaning would be to miss the point God was trying to make.
The creation of Adam and Eve and Noah's Ark full of animals were specifically taught to us in this category of higher meaning through metaphor.
