It is a dopey comment, in every way.
People don't know if it's serious or not. Maybe they shouldn't be joking until they know more. If he made that point, he'd be correct.
But his comment was that people would think it was cute and funny after they found out people were dead in the streets.

Remember that the big plant explosion in Detroit several days ago didn't make the cable-newsies until the next morning. Some mentioned it in their updates but only local stations covered it extensively. The local stations here (Detroit) covered it non-stop most of the night.
