Why pick 1990? I said the early 1990's. Gasoline and other fuel oil related products are but a portion of what constitutes the cost of living and are something that people have control over to a point. Consolidation of driving trips, lowering the temp in the home by 1 degree or raising it in the summer by 2-3 degrees makes a noticeable difference. Energy usage in the areas that cause the greatest spike in prices (mfg, auto, airline) are self regulating in the sense that they eventually reach a limit at which economies slow and demand lessens, causing a drop in prices)

I simply don't agree with your premise that high gasoline prices, at least at this level will in any way effect the economy. Look at Europe, Britain has a great economy and they are and have been paying easily twice what we are for gasoline.

from Aug-Dec it was about $1.50. Prior to Aug it was about $1.10
