...In recent weeks, radio talk shows, cable news and Internet blogs fumed that taxpayer money would help immigrants who might be in the country illegally. They advised rounding up such immigrants instead.
Some supporters of the site countered with accusations of racism. But at its core, the debate reflected the struggle in Herndon and other Washington suburbs to integrate a steady flow of new immigrants -- those here legally and illegally.
"This has been a horrendously difficult issue," Mayor Michael O'Reilly said. He said every worker has a constitutional right to "stand on a street corner whether they have documents or not."
As a condition of the permit granted to Project Hope, the nonprofit group must distribute information to contractors telling them that hiring undocumented immigrants is illegal. But Project Hope officials said they will not ask the laborers to disclose their status.
The speakers last night -- the carry-over crowd from a seven-hour hearing Tuesday in Herndon's small council chambers -- were evenly split about the proposed site as they testified before the television cameras that lined the aisles.
Opponents from Herndon and as far away as Colorado called for stepped-up police enforcement, legislative changes and an end to the hiring of undocumented workers. .................
Supporters cited the biblical exhortation to love thy neighbor and begged the council not to allow the community to turn its back on its less-fortunate members. They said the problem is not immigration but a neighborhood conflict over noise, littering and safety.
"This controversy will not disappear if we . . . maintain the status quo," said Stef Woods, a lawyer for Just Neighbors, a group that helps immigrants.
Each side blamed the other for the animosity in the town, where foreign-born residents now make up 38 percent of the 22,000 residents.

He said every worker has a constitutional right to "stand on a street corner whether they have documents or not."
...um... no they don't.
Exactly, thank you. These idiotic politicians make statements like this, and they're never called on it. Nowhere in the Constitution does it give you the right!
It's also laughable in the face of the facts that these people are here ILLEGALLY. THEY ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE IN THIS COUNTRY, let alone looking for work.
This Mayor should be fired, impeached, run out of town on a rail, tarred and feathered, whatever - just remove him from his seat of power, he does not deserve to be there, he's failing to uphold the law, and he's a disgrace.
This has GOT to stop. They're not listening to us, from the Mayor's mansion all the way to the White House. I'm tired of being mad about this.
"As I watched DC and Northern Virginia get smaller in my rear view window, I reflected AGAIN how fortunate I am that I no longer live near that place."
I'll be joining you soon...one more month and I'm out of Herndon forever, moving to flyover country in central Virginia...3.5 hours away from the madness.
I moved to Roanoke, about 4.5 hours away. I do a lot of work in DC, but get to leave it to come to a sane place when my work is done.
Do INS Agents ever "visit" these types of facilities to make spot checks? It seems like it would be like shooting fish in a barrel to help make arrest quotas.
Lynchburg for me. We'll be practically neighbors.
Arrest quotas?...HAhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
[[Supporters cited the biblical exhortation to love thy neighbor and begged the council not to allow the community to turn its back on its less-fortunate members.]]
The less fortunate??? WTF is he taking about? These people are in this country ILLEGALLY and breaking US law.
I am telling you people, the way to attack this problem is through the IRS by making everybody realize that this is about TAX EVASION, both by these illegal workers and especially by the employers that hire them. If you or me were working under the table and not paying taxes, our asses would be in jail, yet these dam wetbacks and the people that hire them get off scott free.
Welcome the area.
Officials with the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services planned to meet this morning with representatives from nonprofit organizations that work with young people to discuss how to tackle the county's gang problem.
The Aug. 5 knifings of six teens in Silver Spring and Wheaton by a dozen suspected Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13, gang members prompted calls for more attention and resources to be directed to anti-gang activities...........***
***....Nearly a decade ago, the IRS began giving out Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers so people without Social Security numbers could pay taxes. Since then, more than 8 million applicants have received numbers, and about 2 million are used on tax returns.
The IRS knows illegal immigrants are using the numbers to get mortgages.
"We don't have control over whatever the taxpayers do with the numbers other than filing a tax return," spokeswoman Irma Trevino said.
In addition to the ID numbers, immigrants must show that they have been in the country, worked and paid taxes for at least two years in order to get mortgages. Because many do not have credit scores, they must prove their good credit through documents such as utility and cell phone bills, rent receipts, bank statements and paychecks. The interest rates and loan costs are in line with those of buyers who have Social Security numbers.***

Oh boy, more "don't-ask-don't-tell"
Yep, you'd think the IRS would be very interested in millions of tax evading employees working for millions of tax evading employers.......however, I don't ever recall the IRS *also* stepping in (filing charges) in an immigration matter.
(on the other hand, if you are Joe CITIZEN, the IRS will pursue you FOREVER)
Welcome to Herndon, Virginia, the perfect "base camp" for your visit to the Washington, D.C. Area
"Small Town Charm with BIG CITY Connections "

Quite frankly, the home addresses of ALL town council members and mayor who voted for this illegal alien hiring w/tax monies proposal, should be posted in local or national Hispanic-language newspapers, tongue in cheek, and then intimate to the Latino readership that if they are 'indocumentado' (undocumented) that Herndon VA is now THE PLACE, that it's 'sanctuario', and that they should go right to the neighborhoods of these brave Herndon politicians to thank them and to also stand on those corners soliciting jobs as they will be the safest place for them since those folks cast the 'yes' votes, and whined 'our hands are tied on immigration'. Let's see how THEY (and especially their neighbors) would feel with this in THEIR backyards.
I'm pretty pissed off.
I live in Herndon, although I don't live within the corporate limits so I don't pay Herndon City taxes, and it is just mind-boggling.
They're fighting this in Houston too.
They must be setting these centers up everywhere.
Actually, their hands are not tied, but they are 'green' from the tainted money they probably receive from local 'human rights groups' (leftists), and local contractors on the other side who want cheap, illegal, tax free labour. What a scam.
