Gaza activist sets herself on fire

A woman has set herself on fire at a roadblock in southern Israel.

The woman is believed to be a right-wing activist protesting at Israel's Gaza Strip withdrawal, said police spokeswoman Sharon Brown.

Haaretz newspaper reported that the woman, whose name has not been revealed, suffered burns on more than 60% of her body.

The incident occurred near the southern Israeli town of Netivot.

The woman suffered life-threatening burns on 70 per cent of her body, police and hospital officials said.

The 54-year-old woman, whose name was not revealed, was taken to a hospital in southern Israel in serious condition, police said.

The woman had been carrying an anti-Gaza pullout sign, said police spokeswoman Liat Nidam.

The woman set herself ablaze after getting a glass of water from a policeman, Nidam said. Police ran toward her and doused the flames with their shirts and water.

Paramedic Osnat Asulil said he asked the woman why she did it, and she responded that it was an act of protest. He said there was a strong smell of petrol around her.

Hundreds of thousands of right-wing Israelis have been protesting at Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's so-called "disengagement" plan, evacuating the Gaza Strip and four West Bank settlements.

It's not funny but Cindy popped to mind. Prayers for this disturbed woman.

He said there was a strong smell of petrol around her.

Then he got there too soon.

I'm sorry, but my sympathy siphon has run dry for people who do these things. It NEVER makes a difference, at this stage of the game.

I cannot begin to tell you how disgusted I am by your comment. And that is the only response that you will receive from me.

I fear you are right - she will probably sink into a coma and die. It might be the best thing for her. They have good medical treatments, now, for extensive burns, but 60% petrol burns is such a grave injury.

While I feel for the families, I do wonder about people like this. What purpose does setting oneself on fire serve?

Prayers for this disturbed woman.

I join you in that. Self immolation is so dreadful - I just don't understand it. And yet, quite a number of people do choose this way of killing themselves - they must be mentally ill.

More than half is usually an immediate notice for death. I have heard 40% from nurses I work with who work at the burn center as well.

And I think it's highly probable that she will not have hands or feet or both, or at least not use of them, if she should happen to survive.

Apparently, they often want to make everyone sit up and take notice.

Uhhhh...actually, I first thought this was about Cindy too. Does that make me sick or just a wishful thinker?

It's a very painful way to go. Poor thing.

I know a nurse who worked with the Pentagon victims. She said most of those who died didn't die from their burns but they drowned with jet fuel filled lungs.

If she wanted everyone to sit up and take notice, she should have set Sharon on fire.

Nothing says you suck, I hate you and your plan is stupid like a Molotov cocktail upside the head.
