Half of Mexico Wants to Move to the U.S.

Half of Mexico Wants to Move to the U.S.

Jim Meyers, NewsMax.com
Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005
Nearly half of Mexican adults would move to the U.S. if they could – and one in five say they would do so illegally, new surveys reveal.

These same surveys suggest that America's problem with illegals will only get worse in the years to come.

Waves of illegals continue to wreak havoc on America's southern border, and this past weekend New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson ordered a state of emergency in four of his state's counties that border Mexico "because of the urgency of the situation and, unfortunately, because of the total inaction and lack of resources from the federal government and Congress."

Arizona followed suit and declared a state of emergency on Monday.

Whether Mexico Gets Better or Not

The surveys of Mexican citizens by the Pew Hispanic Center also found that increased education and an improved standard of living won't dampen the stampede of illegals coming across the border.

The two surveys conducted in Mexico asked: "If at this moment you had the means and opportunity to go to live in the USA, would you go?" Almost half - 46 percent - said yes.

When asked if they would be inclined to work and live in the USA "without authorization," meaning illegally, 21 percent said they would.

Showing that interest in emigrating isn't confined to the poor, more than one-third of Mexican college graduates said they would move to the U.S. if they could, and more than one in eight said they'd be willing to migrate even if they had to enter the country illegally.

"People with college degrees believe they have greater economic opportunities by migration to the U.S. – even illegally – than they would staying at home," Roberto Suro, director of the Pew Hispanic Center, a research group in Washington, told USA Today.

Mexicans wishing to come to the U.S. are "distributed across the whole breadth of Mexican society," he added.

A Difference of Perspective

Six in 10 Hispanics born in the U.S. favor requirements that people show proof of citizenship or legal residency before they can get a driver's license, but only 29 percent of foreign-born Hispanics agree.

An estimated 10 million Mexicans now live in the U.S., more than half of them illegally, according to Suro.

The unfettered movement of illegals across our southern border is costing American taxpayers dearly:

Roosevelt also deported a large number of illegals, at least a couple of million during the depression.

And he deported a boat load of Jews back to Nazi Germany.

Yes he did but I wasn't commenting on that but just the fact several presidents of both parties have dealt with illegal immigration from Mexico. It's not a new problem.

The date on that says 1990, a whole lot has changed since then. I would love an updated map!

You can't really blame them? Who would want to live there where corruption is a way of life. Does anyone here have any confidence in your life or property when visiting there?

A Wikipedia page I found lists the population density of the US at 30 people/km2, and Mexico at 53 people/km2. A combined density would be around 38 people/km2. While we'd take a hit in terms of higher density, a merger would be better than the movement of people in with no gain in land, as we have now. That only increases our density but reduces theirs.

We'd still have illegal aliens though, as there are several million people from countries other than mexico in the US illegally.

Thank you! :-)

Actually, we have tried, in the past, from when Pancho Villa was doing his raids, on down; with little deterrent. It was VERY bad in the late '40s- the '50s; so bad, that there was at least one movie ( not a documentary, a movie ) made about it.

Mexicans wishing to come to the U.S. are "distributed across the whole breadth of Mexican society"

DLC New Democrat Third Way progressives and mainline Republicans agree on two things: 1) free tradin' transfers of technology, wealth, and jobs to developing nations and 2) free movement of labor.

The latter for the remittances which are critical for developing nations' income and are wealth transfers favored by the progressives. Mainline Republicans are just happy for the government-subsidized "cheap" labor.

DLC New Democrat Third Way progressives and mainline Republicans are both silent on the criminal, corrupt ruling class of Mexico; both count the ruling class among their friends -- their class equals.

How serious is immigration "reform"?

Both DLC New Democrat Third Way progressives and mainline Republicans are asking us to accept "reform" that is little more than putting an end to calling them ILLEGAL immigrants and instead call them "guest workers."

Why won't DLC New Democrat Third Way progressives and mainline Republicans reform their buddies in the corrupt, criminal ruling class of Mexico? Globalist ideology and money.

You're very welcome. :)

I was a baby in the 50's and am ashamed to admit that I do not know very much about that period of time as it relates to immigration issues. I do know about Pancho Villa, so I guess that's something. LOL

As you know, throughout history attempts have been made to try and stop the flow of illegal immigrants, but sadly, those attempts have been futile. Now this situation is overflowing, literally. I can only imagine the frustration of the men and women of our Border Patrol. Like frustrated policemen, trying to fight crime by enforcing the law and yet failing to receive support from our courts and judges. Trying to fight crime with one hand tied behind their back. I do not envy them, but they do have my gratitude.

I was little, in the '50s, but I remember the documentaries that CBS did about the problem.

I'm an avid viewer of TCM ( I like old movies ) and two weeks ago, they brought up the HUGE Southern Border problems throughout the 20th century, but especially how bad it was in the '50s and talked about the movie, which will be shown soon.

Presidents have tried to do something, a few times, but sadly, a lot of governors and mayors have taken the illegals' side and thwarted every effort to curtail and/or stop the flow.

It's on page 4.

I've been saying for years that Canada and Mexico will eventually join the USA. People think I'm nuts but I'm 100% convinced that will happen and likely in many of our lifetimes.

I am thankful, however, that after 100 years of this, people are finally coming together and demanding something be done about this gross negligence in our national security.

I am in Southern Cal. The forefront of this "invasion". I don't know what you mean when you say 100 years. I recall in the late 60s going into the DMV, and everyone spoke English, and all the testing for DMV was in English. (Of all things).

I recall in the 70s going into hospitals and the waiting rooms were not crammed with half of Mexico. And they were building new hospitals, and none were going bankrupt.

What I don't recall are drive-by shootings, and murders that are committed by illegal aliens almost daily. I don't recall seeing people pushing shopping carts, and 40 year old men riding old broken bicycles, on nearly ever street. I do recall, all of our television stations were in English, (of all things) and there were not daily broadcast telling us that it's costing tax payers billions every year now to suppport half of Mexico.

I could easily go on. And these are my memories going back to the 1970s. Even the early 80s weren't too bad compared to what we have now. In just the past 25 years or so, the differences are night and day.

How about within the next ten years?

"I oppose amnesty, placing undocumented workers on the automatic path to citizenship. Granting amnesty encourages violation of our laws and perpetuates illegal immigration. America is a welcoming country, but citizenship must not be the automatic reward for violating the laws of America."

I enjoy the old movies too, and there's no better place than TCM to find them. When I get fed up with today's lack of good entertainment, I turn to TCM. I wish I had watched the show you are referring to. I'll have to look up their program schedule and see if I find the movie you've mentioned. I don't suppose you can recall the title, or part of the title? If not, I'll just search the program information and I'm sure I'll be able to find it.
