"Police believe a bad batch of heroin may have contributed to the deaths of Mellie Carballo and Maria Pesantez, both 18 and with promising futures" That darn 'bad' batch of heroin. Had it been a 'good' batch, well, who knows? The world may have been their oyster.

Odds are it was "good" (depending on your perspective i guess) heroin. Most OD's come from first timers, or users who get used to a certain dosage, say it's only 50 percent pure. Then they switch dealers, or a new supply comes in, they take the same amount, but it ends up being 99 percent pure. They effectively double their dosage and die.
Sad case, but I've always had trouble feeling sympathy for drug users and drunk drivers killing themselves. Pity may be a better word to use.

The cops should find another way to label it, illegal heroin (I'm no scientist, does heroin have any 'good' uses?) is always bad. It is an absolute waste of two talented young womens lives. And, frankly, they probably, at their ages, had heard all the 'don't do drugs' talk and the DARE presentations, yet they were sucked in by the 'allure' anyway. A tragedy whether they are 2 young coeds or 2 high school drop outs.
