Wasn't Mort just praising 'moderates' for attempting to isolate those 'far right extremists and Christians" and now he admits their own survey proves those cultural and national security issues are why the Dems can't capitalize?
I wish Mort wouldn't try to pretend he wants the Republicans to succeed as he did when he was giving the GOP advice in a previous article. He was fooling no one.
Good point about the polls. The Democrats are doing worse than the Republicans in those polls. The president is doing better than all of them and ranks above the MSM in polls. He also retains extremely high ratings among the base, and since most states are leaning conservative, a president that can get the base vote out for Republicans isn't good for Democrats. They keep focusing on the overall national numbers which are skewed anyway, but the base vote is what is key in most of these states.

They are electing a new polity with our lack of borders so if 06 is a bust for the haters on the left wait an election cycle or two after they lock up the electoral college.

I think immigration and porkbarreling and continued high fuel prices could make problems for the GOP. But those are more likely to be a cause for lower voter turnout.
The Dims aren't in position to capitalize on GOP vulnerabilities.
I think the Hackett race showed us more of political reality than what Mort did here.

Oh, they'll deliver all right, Mort. More Pubbies to public office.

Historically speaking, the 2006 midterm elections should be a bonanza for Democrats. Since World War II, the party out of power has picked up an average of 34 House and five Senate seats in a presidents sixth year in office.
In 1950, the Korean War had just begun, and only 20 percent of Americans believed that fighting it was a mistake. Yet President Harry Trumans Democrats lost 29 House seats and six Senate seats.
In 1952, when 52 percent of the country was against the war and the country was electing President Dwight Eisenhower, Democrats lost another 22 House seats and two Senate seats.
In 1966, only 31 percent thought that the Vietnam War was a mistake. Still, Democrats lost 47 House and four Senate seats.
In 1970, with 56 percent of the country against the war, Richard Nixons GOP lost 12 House seats, while gaining two in the Senate.
Incumbent parties also tend to lose big when the public is dissatisfied with the economy. In the midst of a recession in 1958, Eisenhowers Republicans lost 48 House and 13 Senate seats. Mort, WTF were you thinking/drinking when you wrote this....?
One Word Mort.
Redistricting.

Does anyone in his right mind believe this crap?
This is another example of guys that HAVE to write to get paid. That combined with an odd year August gives us stupid stuff like this.

Democrats should be able to make gains in 2006 based simply on history. False premise, kinda like predicting the stock market based on who wins the Superbowl.
