Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer said the small intelligence unit, called "Able Danger," had identified Atta and three of the other future Sept. 11 hijackers as al-Qaida members by mid-2000. He said military lawyers stopped the unit from sharing the information with the FBI.
The commission investigating the Sept. 11 attacks left the Able Danger claims out of its official report.
In an interview with Fox News Channel and The New York Times, Shaffer said the panel was not given all the information his team had gathered.
"I'm told confidently by the person who did move the material over that the 9/11 commission received two briefcase-size containers of documents," Shaffer said in the interview, part of which was aired by Fox News Tuesday night. "I can tell you for a fact that would not be ... one-20th of the information that Able Danger consisted of during the time we spent."
Former commission chairman Thomas Kean and vice chairman Lee Hamilton said last week that the military official who made the claim had no documentation to back it up.
Shaffer rejected that remark. "Leaving a project targeting al-Qaida as a global threat a year before we were attacked by al-Qaida is equivalent to having an investigation of Pearl Harbor and leaving somehow out the Japanese," he said.

Hey,do you guys remember Coleen Rowley? She was the whistle-blower on the Mussoui(sp?) flight school memo. Do think it not strange that her account of who knew what and when was taken as gospel by the press, the 9/11 panel,et al, while Schafer's account of who knew what and when can hardly be mentioned without skepticism? I read the entire account as Ms. Rowley saw it (in her own hand, TIME art.)and she pointed to no greater evidence of the 20th hijacker participating in 9/11 than that which Schafer has offered by way of testimony concerning Atta. Why was it that the 9/11 commission viewed Coleen's testimony as an obvious dot that was missed while Able Danger's warnings and info is shrugged off as not being historically significant?

Now that you mention her, why didn't the former Sect. of Defense Cohen discuss "Able Danger" when he came forth and whined about "wag the dog" to the commissioners.

Unfortunately, such hypocrisy is both common and unsurprising.

Not only that but after that interview where he claimed that he woulda, coulda, shoulda captured bin Laden - this relevation just makes it even more special...
Do you think that the fact that the year was 2000 and President Bush was elected in 2000 has thrown them off and they think this will fall on President Bush...
This just in - Sandy Berger is now the official spokesman for JustShredIt paper shredders...when you absolutely positively have to cover up your negligence...

Ostensible reason for wall was to prevent invasion of privacy by a big brother government. Anyone think Chinagate might have been real motivation? Clinton took hundreds of thousands form the daughter of a high ranking Chinese General and gave waivers of sensitive technology but investigation by FBI went nowhere. Could they possible have been barred from getting sensitive information linking Clinton to Chicoms by Gorelick wall?

I think the San Francisco Chronicle thinks this makes Bush look bad The Left is going to be shocked when they realize they're promoting a story that proves Clinton's people set up blocks that allowed 9/11 to happen...and furthermore, that the 9/11 commission covered the dirty little secret of one of their members...Gorelick.
Regardless of the facts, I predict a series of denials.

You are absolutely right. But let us turn to that horrible interrogative pronoun that requires interpretation, WHY? When faced with two possible whistle-blower stories why would the MSM and the 9/11 panel choose one over the other. If the aim of the MSM and panel was to attack Bush in an election year (as I believe it to have been) then surely either story of "missed dots" could be used to blame Bush. In other words, why choose a story that implicates the FBI (Coleen's story)to blame Bush over a story that blames DoD lawyers. If you ask me the FBI blame game allows for incompetence without bringing the "WALL" into the mix, while Schafer's story implicating the DoD Lawyers also implicates the sharing of info climate. Thus the choice was obvious: hang the Muller's FBI, try to peg it to Bush, and keep all discussion away from intel sharing (or lack thereof).
