BAGHDAD, Iraq – Multi-national ground forces, acting on an Iraqi tip, discovered and destroyed a large cache of artillery shells in the early hours of Aug. 16.
The shells were apparently intended for use as improvised explosive devices.
An explosive ordinance disposal technician advised that the 25 to 30 individual 152mm rounds located inside a building within Al Anbar province be destroyed.
Security forces confirmed there were no friendly or enemy personnel in the building. Security forces destroyed the building and its contents with an air strike after ensuring all non-combatants were clear of the area.
Secondary explosions were observed.
No civilians were harmed during the operation, which took place in its entirety before daybreak. One terrorist was killed during the initial stages of the operation.

To make the analogy to WW II...
Mother Sheet-han said we should not have "invaded" Afghanistan. Instead we should have " just sent in some people to get Bin Laden." She would have said we shouldn't have bombed Germany, we "should just have sent insome people to get Hitler." God.. is this woman so F'ng stupid..just so dumb.
heavy stuff--they "daisy-chain" the 122mm stuff for armored vehicles, but one 152mm shell will do the job from underneath.
The EOD guys on the scene I'm sure knew best, but it is curious that they used an air strike to destroy these--sometimes that just destroys some and scatters the other rounds where they can be policed up and used later. Maybe they did some prep work first to ensure they all went up.
