Kabul, 12 August (AKI) - Three hundred new telephone booths have been installed in the Afghan capital, Kabul. During the inauguration ceremony, the Afghan minister for communication, Amirzai Sangeen, explained that half the phone boxes were placed in the city's shopping areas, while the rest were installed in the more densely populated areas of the capital. Built by the German company Siemens, the booths cost 200,000 US dollars and were paid for by the Afghan government and installed by a local private company.
The authorities took the initiative to set up the booths to meet the needs of Afghan citizens who cannot afford the high costs of making local and international calls on mobile phones.
At the moment there are two mobile telephone companies operating in Afghanistan - the Wireless Communication Company (AWCC) and Roshan.
Phone booths seem like an antique concept. I wonder if these will be useful. I hope so. Afghanistan deserves good news -- we'd all like to see the Afghan people on the road to more freedom and prosperity.
$666 each. (Okay, $666.667)
Article here said that some families in Iraq are paying $200 a month, despite their much smaller incomes. Seems the mobile companies still can't break those $30 price points.
Most 3rd world countries I visit, everyone uses text, since it's cheaper.
agreed
Can you hear me now LOL!
