A bit of an urban legend, that. There's no doubt Marilyn wasn't rail-thin, but sizes can and have changed since her day. One website even says according to MM's dimensions, she'd fit into a contemporary size 4.

In fact wore a size 14 They have some of her dresses in the Smithsonian. They don't look like what would be a 14 today.
I've heard that dress sizes have gotten bigger as Americans have expanded. A 14 in the 1950's might be a 10 today.
