Marine of the Year Daniel Cotnoir remains a hero in the eyes of some Lawrence residents, despite being charged with attempted murder for shooting into a crowd early Saturday. ``Somebody had to step up to the plate,'' said Bruce Reynolds, owner of the Longhorn Gas Station on Broadway Avenue, who, like other residents is exasperated by late-night carousing and violence in Lawrence.

The problem of violence in his area was well documented long before Daniel Cotnoir ever went to Iraq. Local Authorities have been indifferent...even of bullets being fired into area homes, including Cotnoir's, after the crowds leave nightclubs. The Saturday incident occurred after patrons left a club owned by a politically connected police officer's family, as reported on WRKO radio.

Political corruption seems to be where all things end.

Large crowd?...2:30am?....15 year old girl?

Yeah, there is a problem in that town and it is not the guy who shot from his window into a rowdy crowd that was throwing stuff at his house.

I don't think the sergeant is a bad person, he just used bad judgment.

As for the bar, sounds like a law suit in the making, against the owner and the city. What was a 15 year old girl doing hanging around the club? How many underage teenagers were in that club being served alcohol?

As someone who has had to deal with dangerous, but politically neighbors. However, firing a shotgun out a window is criminally stupid. The thing that bothers me the most is using his war experiences as an excuse. The anti-war MSM in Boston has latched on to this as another example of the "evil Bush war for oil" and its consequences. I know this guy's attorney is probably the source of this crap, but it just smacks of cynicism.

I do agree-- He should have reacted by utterly destroying the Bar -just turning it into a parkinglot. This Marine reminds me of one recently paid tribute to by the Rock--
(though the original was-IMO closer to reality)the folks supplying booze and not controlling the clients ought be
tarred and feathered. But the Marine deserves accomodations.
(even in his bad judgement)
