I'll get excited when I see corporate employers of illegal aliens socked with heavy fines and marched off to prison. Until then; much ado about nothing.

They will choose the most flimsy examples to give the heavy fines to. Such as Walmart hiring a janitor service that hired some illegal aliens. The examples will be chosen for the purpose of trying to make the public lose its desire to stop the invasion.

Looks like that little roly-poly NM governor did what none of us could do. He woke up the Republican Party on the immigration issue. Better late than never, Delay. Now wake up the President because he will miss the party otherwise.

I'm confused. Is DeLay now a slave of the dreaded Buchanan-Tancredo conspiracy?

Yep...It's now official...Delay's a pitch-forkin, U.S. of A. first, Buchananite...

"Delay also said that he "would support legislation even stricter than Cornyn's." He said he is against guest workers bringing their families and that children born to illegal aliens should not automatically become U.S. citizens."

The latter is the most significant change in immigration policy in decades... if we make that change the whole 'anchor baby' system will be kaput.

Conservatives have come a long way. In August 2001 conservatives on this form, usually from California, who complained about illegal immigration were generally ignored. Today, only George Bush and the Republican Party's senior hierarchy are ignoring them.

I remember back in 2001 watching Tancredo on C-SPAN saying all these things that are finally getting some attention. I remember the TV camera scanning the whole place and it was empty, no one there except for Tancredo and I was thinking "that says it all.."

"We want a bill that doesn't even mention guest workers."

A guest worker program is even part of Tancredo's bill!
You will need it or you will get such vehement opposition from the cheap-labor lobby and the immigration lawyers, it will fail. Furthermore, you can't stop illegal immigration without allowing reasonable forms of legal immigration.

The best you can hope for is to get the Republicans to have a *limited* guest worker program, such as Tancredo.
Limiting families etc. sounds great in principle, but when you have a supreme court in effect saying that kids have legal rights to school even if they are here in USA illegally, it is hard to have legal recourse for appropriate Government behavior.

"We want the current laws enforced strictly."

You'd think that would be a no brainer! :-)
Kyl-Cornyn bill has put in provisions for employer sanctions that would finally get us back to enforcing the laws.

Now add the anti-sanctuary language *and* ideas like Lamar Smith's (R-TX) to help local law enforcement enforce the laws, *and* the ideas for funding more beds for illegal aliens, *and* some way to end catch-n-release by INS, ie, edn the amnesty loopholes, and you have many of the holes in the system plugged.

But it won't be easy.

"Pubs are going to loose the next election on immigration"

Why? The public embraces the Democrats' "pro-amnesty" position?!?!

I find it funny that cynics, on a thread where the House majority leader basically has taken the stance we would WANT him to take, still have to be in rant-mode.

Take this for what it is: A very positive sign that we will NOT see the Republican party throw in the towel on this issue. The core of the Republican party (folks like McCain excepted) do not want illegal immigration to continue unabated and do not want open borders.

Employer sanctions and internal enforcement will fall off very quickly after the program begins. Republicans only care about an expansive guest worker program and keeping terrorists from crossing the border. Enforcement against employers and "new" illegals (guest workers that stay after their alloted time) would hurt buisness and we cant have that. Learn Spanish.

Delay is just aligning himself with nutcase Tancredo to get Delay out of office. Delay's hatred of Tom Delay is disgusting. I would NEVER vote for a bigoted nutcase like Congressman Delay when he shows such comtempt over House Majority Leader Delay"

ROTFLMAO!!!

The Delay article in the Chronicle that Tancredo is touting also contains 2 statements by DeLay that are in complete opposition to Tancredo's position.

I wonder why Tancredo doesn't mention that.

Thanks for posting that article. I clears up a lot of questions.

Tom DeLay is not shifting his positions much that I can see after reading you more complete article.

For example he says:
""Before any legislation on guest worker program, we must secure our borders," DeLay said. ... To secure the borders, "we need to use all technologies including satellites and unmanned aircraft along our borders... we will put up a virtual wall on our borders with technology," DeLay said.

" This is the Bush plan and is what CBP has been concentrating on in every one of its budgets. Tom isn't saying we should build a real wall, but only a virtual one. And he isn't calling for the border to be sealed, but secured.

This fits right in with Secretary Chertoff's testimony that in order to secure the border we must enact immigration reform. Satellite and unmanned areal vehicle sensors can tell us that someone is crossing the border but it can't tell us whether the person in a migrant worker or terrorist. And the information that someone is crossing the border is useful only if we have human resources sufficient to intercept the suspect. The only way that we can possibly have sufficient human resources to check every suspect is if we enact reforms that divert the vast majority of border crossers to official ports of entry. So Tom is correct. Get the technology in place (ie, secure the border) and then enact a guest worker program.

Tom DeLay has not endorsed Tancredo's positions wholesale, in fact almost everything he said is contrary to Tancredo (Example: "DeLay said he is opposed to any national ID program. Also, sanctions against employers who hire illegals didn't work, he said. ")

Please tell me when Cong. Tancredo stated his support for a national ID program.

Majority Leader Delay said he does not support having the U.S.-born children of illegal aliens automatically becoming U.S. citizens. Majority Leader Delay agrees with Cong. Tancredo on this issue. Do you agree with Majority Leader Delay's position on this issue?

Majority Leader Delay said he believes guest workers should not be allowed to bring their families. Majority Leader Delay agrees with Cong. Tancredo on this issue. Do you agree with Majority Leader Delay's position on this issue?

According to the Houston Chronicle Majority Leader Delay "said he supported the concept behind legislation introduced by U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., that would withhold federal funding from cities such as Houston that refuse to enforce immigration law." Do you agree with Majority Leader Delay's position on this issue?

Do you believe the Mexican and Canadian borders are secure? If not, why have they not been secured?
