Man who claimed passenger sent him text message arrested (Cypress Bababouie)

THESSALONIKI, Greece — Police in northern Greece today arrested a man who claimed to have received a telephone text message from a passenger on board a Cypriot airliner that crashed north of Athens, killing 121 people.

Police identified the man as Nektarios-Sotirios Voutas, 32.

Voutas had called Greek television stations shortly after the Helios Airways flight crashed into a mountainous region north of the capital Sunday, saying his cousin, who he identified as Nikos Petridis, was on board.

He claimed his cousin had sent him a cell-phone text message minutes before the crash saying: ``Farewell, cousin, here we're frozen.''

The report that the plane was cold was taken as a sign of decompression — one of the possible explanations authorities have given for the crash, which was Greece's deadliest.

But police in Thessaloniki said they had determined he was lying, and there was no Petridis on the Cypriot government's official list of victims.

Voutas, a resident of the northern port city of Thessaloniki who had identified himself to Greek media as Sotiris Voutas, faced charges of disseminating false information and causing a public disturbance, police said. He was scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday, they said.

Oh. . .but he did cause a heck of a lot of erroneous speculation on threads related to the mishap.

Now. . .here comes the conspiracy crowd. . .I hear them approaching, chanting "The cover-up begins!"

How would he know they were frozen if he didn't get a text message? As far as I know, he told the newspapers of the text message before the fires were out.

Something isn't right here.

FWIW, I heard a report on one of the news nets a while ago that stated the local coroner's office was suggesting that some of the passengers were alive, though not necessarily conscious, at the time of the crash.

Why would a cousin write a text message about being frozen and not about HOW they CAME to be frozen? Did he have a wife....a child? Why no remark to them?

"If all the people were frozen solid, then who were the two men moving around in the cockpit??"

Don't know. Just reporting what I heard.

They also said that the police had raided the airline headquarters as part of a criminal investigation.

I wondered that two. Unless the cockpit window blew out first...which makes no sense. I was think more along the lines of the two extras in the cockpit had box cutters.

I just heard on Fox News that all the passengers were frozen solid when the plane hit the ground.

Reuters reported some passengers were still alive at impact

Reports also said most passengers were too badly burned to be visually identified, how does this fit in with being frozen solid?

If a toaster can toast a frozen Eggo waffle, I'm sure the intense heat of a plane crash can sear a 'frozen' human fairly well too.

``Farewell, cousin, here we're frozen.''

Many are called, but few are frozen.

I have no idea, Ann. It is all speculation.

All I'm repeating is what was reported.
