Their stay on Gaza and the West Bank was a temporary stay since it never was their lands.A point often forgetten here. Israel never quite had the nerve to defy international (including American) opinion by actually annexing Gaza or the West Bank.

Israel has annexed all of Jerusalem but that has not stopped Bush, et al from demanding they give it away.
Yes, that indeed was a mistake, but one fixable today. It is not too late to annex most of the West Bank and Jerusalem as Israel proper creating defensible borders and retaining historical and biblical Jewish land.
