Ricketts Joins Republican Primary Race For U.S. Senate

OMAHA, Neb. -- Calling himself a conservative, pro-life Republican, Ameritrade Chief Operating Officer Pete Ricketts Saturday joined the Republican primary race for the U.S. Senate.

He said he grew up with great values and tremendous opportunities, and he wants his three children and other people's children to have the same opportunities he had.

Ricketts said issues important to him include tax reform, national defense, international trade and modernization of Social Security.

Ricketts, 40, faces two other Republicans: former Nebraska Attorney General Don Stenberg and former state GOP Chair David Kramer.

The primary winner likely would face Democratic U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson, who is up for re-election to a second term next year.

On Aug. 4, word came that Ricketts would resign his position at Ameritrade to explore "an opportunity in public service." Ricketts hosted the White House’s Karl Rove at Ameritrade last month, and sources told KETV NewsWatch 7 that the resignation signified Ricketts' decision to join the Senate race.

Hopefully, Ricketts' money will be used for GOTV activities. But Ben Nelson starts out the favorite, and he's the best 'Rat in the Senate.

So will this be a Rickets vs. Stenberg Primary or does this Kramer guy have a shot?

Not true, Stenberg leaves a bad taste in too many mouths. The Ex-GOP chair will be seen as to establishment.

He can win the primary and defeat Nelson, if his political skills hold up. He is conservative to the bone.

You said Stenberg leaves a bad taste in too many mouths.

If I recall correctly, he came pretty close to defeating Nelson in '00.

What do you mean when you say that he leaves a bad taste?

What Dane said.

I'm pleased about his enterance into the race. I think he's probably stronger then any of the other candidates, and if he's willing to spend his own cash, he could easily have a huge money advantage over Nelson.

Stenberg ran far behind Bush in the 2000 election, somewhere around 20% behind. Nebraska is a heavily GOP state, and Stenberg proved himself a dull, flat-footed campaigner. If it weren't for Bush's huge victory in Nebraska that year, it wouldn't have even been close.

Good grief. Lighten up. I can easily say that illegal immigration is an integral part of national defense.

What do you mean when you say that he leaves a bad taste?

He's always acted like he deserved the job. At least in my opinion. Nelson is completely beatable this time around.

The bill for his low level radiactive waste site screw up is coming due and the people of this state are not happy about it.

Nelson backed out of committments the state had made in developing a site when he was Govenor. The courts stuck NE with I beleive about 150 million dollar tab for their noncompliance.

Deserved is probably a bad word here. Maybe "annointed" would be more like it.
