Well, I have to admit that driving a Hummer or large SUV is at the very least looking a bit stupid these days with the gas prices what they are. I personally couldn't in good sense or conscience drive a vehicle of that sort. Nor on the other hand would I drive a European import even though it may look trendy among the progressives in my part of town. I drive a fuel-efficient American car. Anyways, it goes both ways. Let's stop driving SUVs, but let's also start drilling like crazy in ANWR and do more offshore drilling. Yes, I know it might be an eyesore and annoy some fish and little furry animals, but I think cuttting down our dependence on foriegn oil easily trumps those concerns - especially when our troops are in harms way. Don't you think?

I'm making a career change with the intention of moving into defense work. I am hoping to help develop technologies that will protect Americans from terrorists at home, protect our troops overseas and allow them to more efficiently kill bad guys.

I don't know that we are in Iraq directly because Al Queda hates democracy. However, there is no doubt that Al Queda does indeed hate democracy and Al Queda's war against the U.S. is at its core based on the fact that the U.S. is most powerful economic, military and symbolic expression the system of liberal democracy which Al Queda views as an existential threat to its interpretation of Islam. I believe the President, after 9/11, said that the terrorists attacked us because they hate freedom; I think that is actually pretty close to the truth. Here is a nice quote from Al-Zarqawi concerning democracy:
