Sec of State Cordell Hull was an avid advocate for free tradeYep, he's the stinkin' socialist SOB who authored the first Federal Income Tax back in 1913.
Every American taxpayer should curse his name on April 15.

Yep, he's the stinkin' socialist SOB who authored the first Federal Income Tax back in 1913Yes, and one is the natural byproduct of the other. When the government could no longer fund itself on tariffs - because tariffs were eliminated* - they had to take money from the American people in the form of income taxes. Bastards.
* of course, if the federal government were smaller to begin with, it would be even less of an issue...

FDR made fun of his speech impediment behind his back, he'd always mimic him saying "fwee twade."

Relevant quote, "...He couldn't imagine Hull, Roosevelt's Secretary of State, with a German lisp reciting his famous underbwush speech on free trade, "We must hack away the bawwiers and artificial westwictions which encumber the fwee flow of twade and exchange of services between nations." That would have been a spectacle..."
