Not a wild stretch, I remember the Libs during the Cold War would claim that if a meteorite or a comet hit the Earth it would trigger world war III. That the superpowers wouldn't know the difference from an impact or a nuclear explosion. They assumed that everyone in the worlds military were stupid. Carl Segan wrote about this in Cosmos.
