Why should New Orleans think they can repeal reality?

Good question. Why does any heavily-developed coastal area think they can repeal reality? They play the odds; every year, most of the coast is NOT hit by a major hurricane. And if the law of averages get them, the taxpayer subsidizes their rebuilding in the same d*mn place.

But the dead people are still dead.

I think it is mockingly understating it to say that some of those people could have been saved.

The me-first attitudes and greed of those who could have made a difference cost many innocent people their lives.

Would that the colossal effrontery used to point accusatory fingers at the Feds had been directed at the storm instead.

Pictures of buses stranded in water and impoverished people beseeching transportation will be hard to sweep under the sodden rugs of the New Orleans political machine offices.
