Fusion is/would be the answer to all our energy problems. Hydrogen economy? No problem. Fusion means cheap an abundant electricity, more than sufficient to split hydrogen from water, recharge batteries, supply our electrical grid. It also seems to be perpetually 25 to 30 years away from commercial viability. I remember reading an article on it as a kid in 1975 or so and thinking to myself, 25 years so we should have this in 2000 or so. Fat chance. Now its 2030 or beyond.
Not saying that we shouldn't invest in it and invest heavily but its not a short term or even medium term solution but rather a long-term goal.

The nuclear bomb went from theory to practice in, what, forty-eight months, right? From there, a workable reactor system was produced in less than two years.
Instead of wasting taxes enriching their campaign contributors, the Republicans need to initiate a new Manhattan Project and really free the economy up.
