"Kidding aside Tonk you left off an easy one to recommend.

Be a Boy Scout Leader or a Girl Scout Leader and a friend to the spouse left behind to help raise up a strong healthy service member's child and instill the values we so cherish in them."

That's EXACTLY what I mean by playing offense, rather than defense!

Great suggestions, Tonk! For those who cannot attend, they can STILL make a difference to our troops and their families.

Here are a few handy suggestions and links (How to Help our Heroes) from our site.

As I was getting groceries I thought of another thing to do - get with your VFW/Amer. Legion whatever and set up a Helping Husbands Handyman Line that the ladies left behind can call to get things around the house and while the guys are doing the repairs the ladies can do that girl stuff and bond maybe even become surrogate Gramma's and Granpa's.
