Fair enough, but however much it might be 'a fact' that we own Taiwan it's an issue that's going nowhere because we recognize that Taiwan is part of China, and China is the PRC...with, of course, complications. The time for us to make a claim was when the Japanese left, or the KMT arrived, or when Nixon went to China.
I wish there were an easy way around this problem, but, barring the rapid the democratization of China - and even then, the necessary acquiesence of the Taiwanese people - that's not going to happen.
And I can't imagine what a US war over Taiwan would look like, thank god.
bump
Otherwise I don't think we wish to evict the people who live there ~ but, you never know what will happen in the future.
The Chicom nutcases go tossing a few nukes our way, the Chinese, per se, may well be in some serious biological difficulty.
This is interesting. Somebody's going to have to contact Jimmy Carter and tell him.
Hmm, how did I manage to miss that? Wonder if Reagan attended?
Have you noticed the ROC flag? It's not very different from ours. The original KMT/Nationalist party star-symbol (white star shaped object on a field of blue) is set where our own 50 white stars are on our own field of patriotic blue. The rest of the flag is Chinese lucky red where ours has stripes of white and red. An expat American can look at the ROC flag, and feel a (very) serious tug. It's the flag you see on those old Flying Tigers jackets.
If Taiwanese, ever did somehow decide on statehood - disregarding for sake of discussion the ... dustup that could start - the flag issue itself would not present a design problem. Fire up an ACER or Tatong computer with a CAD program written in Hsinchu, you could have a new design in no more than 15 fen zhong.
Hillary?
Well, this would explain why the Chinese communists are so vociferous in their claims on the island. They probably came to the same conclusion at one time or another.
Wheeler IS a pistol!
We are strong enough to do both...the question is whether we will or not.
"What is it going to do with it?"
Congress will find a way to tax it while the IRS finds a way to get them for unpaid back taxes.
bump for safekeeping.
When I was growing up, "Taiwan" was called Formosa. Beijing was called Peking. Muslims were called Moslems!! What the hell is going on here??!! Can't we just stop for a minute and quit renaming things? What's next?? Are they going to rename Saigon, "Ho Chi Minh City??!! Come on, people! Get a grip!!
Taiwan already has McDonalds and the Disney channel.
LOL! I got sidetracked and didn't post it!
I never heard tell of this.
IMHO, No one "owns" Taiwan or the Taiwanese people, how very 19th century of the writer. That being said, if China wanted to try and take it by force, I do believe they will wait until after Jan. 2008, for obvious reasons. GWB wouldn't stand for it. Hitlery would, so would McCain. One of those two are most likely (sad to say it) going to be our next president, and I don't see a whole lot of backbone in either one for protecting democracy in the world.
thanks for the ping...it would be nice if Taiwan had a huge arsenal of nuclear weapons so the chinese would be frightened to try and attack them.
The UN is involved, so we can expect little in the way of legal relief for Taiwan. In 1971 the UN affirmed Red Chinas claim to Taiwan with Resolution 2758 - which recognized Red China as the sole representative of China (including Taiwan) in the organization.
Well, that settles it for Justice Breyer and his ilk!
