To keep you from having to suffer the predations of the enemy on our own soil.

There have been no attacks on our soil since 9/11. Our men and women have done and are continuing to do a fine job in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Yeah that's right, all soldiers should have a round table discussion, and vote before doing their duty. Then if most of the soldiers don't like the way their action is being reported they can shoot the press, as long as the majority agree. The US army doesn't need to be a disciplined obedient force, it can be a democratic mob.
