However no one ever talks about the horrible abuses of the southern people, women and children, from the union soldiers. Or the Reconstruction period. The south has never regained its former glory. We are the poorest people in the nation. Our schools never get as much of the government dole as the northern states but thats ok. I think the southern people do for themselves more and have a whole lot of pride. Sorry for rambling. I love my southern homeland and I see alot of rewriting of history where the civil war is concerned.
I love a lot of things about the South, but the rebellion is not one of them. There is a whole lot more about the South than the slaveowners rebellion and even back then there was a lot of Southerners who were not in favor of the Confederacy.
I agree that Reconstruction was not handled as well had Abraham Lincoln, the friend of the South, lived.
In many places of the South, the Union army was hailed as liberators. But whatever depredations the South received from the Union army can be laid on the sorry Confederate government which proved unworthy to protect its "citizens". Anyway, the Confederate government was always more proficient in abusing the many Union sympathizing Southerners and keeping the slaves in chains than fulfilling the legitimate purposes of government.
If the South is economically backward today, it's because of the old rotten foundations of slave society and the unwise decision by the slave "aristocracy" to rebel to protect the growth of their beloved slave system.
