At the time both the North and the South made it plain they were not fighting over slavery.
The Northern troops called themselves Union as that is what they were fighting for. They didn't call themselves liberators or the abolitionists.
Same for the Confederacy. They were fighting to establish a new nation based on local sovereignty. That is why they called themselves Confederates.
The real start of the war is so plain a blind man should be able to see it. When Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers there was no doubt what they were for. No one thought the South was going to attack the North. Fort Sumpter was in Charleston harbor, not Boston.

Assume that this is 100 percent correct and that Lincoln instigated and prosecuted the Civil War for the sole purpose of preserving the Union.
Please explain how the Union side winning the war and the United States remaining whole is a bad thing. Alternatively, explain how the Confederates winning the war and seceding from the Union would have resulted in a more desirable outcome.

No one thought the South was going to attack the North. Fort Sumpter was in Charleston harbor, not Boston. And when Jefferson Davis and the confederate congress authorized raising an army of 100,000 men a month before the attack on Sumter then what were they for? The start of the war was the bombardment of Sumter, the moment when the south made it clear that they were not, and had never been interested in a peaceful solution.
