Both display a commitment to denigrate what's good about the USA to the rest of the world. I believe that for pure-d evil of the soul, it's X42(i). For bone-headed stupidity, case-hardened by arrogance, it's Jimmah. Moldering corpses and dead cats and bitten lips cast a pall over X42(i). It's kind of like his evil lingers for a while after he's out of your sight, like the Cheshire cat's smile...

What you are stating about impressment, and the border forts is, of course correct.

However, the British really wanted us on their side in the Napoleonic Wars and we could have asssited them to the benefit of resolving those issues.

As for the Louisiana Purchase, Napoleon's designs were not at all so benevolent. His plan was to move a large French Army into Louisiana, move it up the Mississippi and attack the British in Canada, recreating Frnech dominion there. These plans fell through when he was die tracked by the Haitian Revolution and problems elsewhere.

I think in the long run, the French and Napoleon were a fara greater threat to us than the other issues, to which the British actually were prepared to resolve before our declaration of war against them.

I believe Madison was a Democrat-Republican the same party referred to today as the Democrats. They had an infaatuation with the radical anti-clerical, anti-monarchical French fanatics and Napoleon.

Read "The French War Against America" It is well footnoted and quite surprising.

President Lyndon Johnson and his claim to fame, The Immigration Act/Hart-Cellar Act of 1965.

As bad as Clinton and Jimmuh were, I think FDR did the most damage.

though Lee should of accepted Lincoln's offer to command the Union forces,

Bite your tongue! LOL. General Lee is a hero around these parts.

It's actually Lyndon Baines Johnson who takes the cake. A liberal Democrat, he wins this contest for three major reasons (and a plethora of minor ones): (1) his inept handling of the war in Vietnam and his failure to use a sedition act to silence Walter Cronkite; (2) the disastrous war on poverty, which made millions dependent on government handouts, subsidizing decadence, encouraging crime (especially illicit drugs), and destroying the black family; and (3) can you say Ramsey Clark?

Clinton comes in second place. He created a morass of impenetrable red tape that effectively empowered terrorists to massacre thousands of Americans and sold our nuclear secrets to a communist competitor for campaign cash while roiling in decadence and demonstrating the same moral authority that LBJ encouraged.

Carter comes in a distant third. His myriad failures weren't quite as awful as those of the two leaders in this category. Although he grossly mismanaged the national economy, sent gas prices to $3/gallon, and chickened in the face of Islamic terrorism, Carter at least genuinely loved America and tried to advance the cause of ordinary Americans. He just failed miserably because he employed poor tactics. That doesn't excuse Carter; it just highlights the intense competition among Democrats for the "worst president" honor.

Oh, yeah, and we're only talking about the 20th century. James Buchanan, the ultimate wimp in a time that demanded strong leadership, takes the all-time crown.

GWB said from the start that catching OBL wasn't as important as wiping out terrorism.

Au contraire, beckysue. He said that well AFTER he turned tail from the Paki border.

Prior to that it was "we're gonna get OBL dead or alive".

I don't think anyone really believes that catching OBL will end terrorism.

However no one ever talks about the horrible abuses of the southern people, women and children, from the union soldiers. Or the Reconstruction period. The south has never regained its former glory. We are the poorest people in the nation. Our schools never get as much of the government dole as the northern states but thats ok. I think the southern people do for themselves more and have a whole lot of pride. Sorry for rambling. I love my southern homeland and I see alot of rewriting of history where the civil war is concerned.

I love a lot of things about the South, but the rebellion is not one of them. There is a whole lot more about the South than the slaveowners rebellion and even back then there was a lot of Southerners who were not in favor of the Confederacy.

I agree that Reconstruction was not handled as well had Abraham Lincoln, the friend of the South, lived.

In many places of the South, the Union army was hailed as liberators. But whatever depredations the South received from the Union army can be laid on the sorry Confederate government which proved unworthy to protect its "citizens". Anyway, the Confederate government was always more proficient in abusing the many Union sympathizing Southerners and keeping the slaves in chains than fulfilling the legitimate purposes of government.

If the South is economically backward today, it's because of the old rotten foundations of slave society and the unwise decision by the slave "aristocracy" to rebel to protect the growth of their beloved slave system.

I don't know about that. I think much has been made about slavery as being the cause of the war. It wasn't. Most of the people didn't own slaves and didn't believe in it. I would like to know how the people looked at the Union army as being liberators when they nearly starved the people to death. There may have been arrogance but there was plenty to go around. But lets just let it stand that it was a terrible war and it should never have happened. I think America will always feel the ramifications of brother killing brother.

But, of course, you DO believe our unintentional(?) bloody and costly establishment of a Shiite government in Iraq will.

Lincoln, by far. He destroyed State's rights and our Republic form of government, leading to the Federal behemoth we have today.

I agree. Slavery, while totally wrong, was a side issue. Like many wars, the WBS was economic in nature. Revisionist history asside, unjust tariffs to protect Northorn big business was the cause of the southern states desiring to leave the nation. After the North invaded, most joined the fight to defend their homeland

There are so many ways one could judge a worst president: worst because of what he did that we disagree with (FDR or Johnson), worst because of what he didn't do (Carter or Clinton) or worst because of corruption (Harding).

From what I know of history, my vote would be on Harding as worst president based on the huge amounts of corrutuption. Once all the chickens come home to roost we may discover more corruption in Clinton's presidency.

Thats true. I agree slavery was wrong. No one should ever be allowed to own another human being. But I think there could have been a way to end. It was like an afterthought. Like oh yeah being we won the war, we might as well abolish slavery while we're at it. The north stood by and let it go on for an awful long time while they were in charge.
