....On the day after the failed July 21 bombings in London, an Indian court in Delhi sentenced Mohammed Afroze to seven years in prison for his participation in a wider plot which had been planned for September 11, 2001. Afroze led another al Qaeda cell which planned to use commercial airlines as missiles to destroy several international targets. The Islamist terrorists intended to send a global message through coordination with the attacks on America. Their plan failed when the terrorists lost their nerve and fled Heathrow.
....AFROZE HAS ALSO ADMITTED to targeting the Rialto Towers in Melbourne, Australia. Australia has a long history of courageous alliance with Britain and the United States, of course, but Australia never set foot in Iraq before the 2003 invasion. They had provided a naval support contingent of three ships with 600 sailors and their own air defense squad. Their mission consisted of interdiction on shipping in the Persian Gulf to ensure no arms made their way into Saddam Hussein's hands during the blockade that preceded the war.

Rediff.com reports that Mohammad Afroz Abdul Razak, an alleged terrorist conspirator being held in India, has told Bombay police that the attacks were planned for 367 days earlier--Sept. 9, 2000--and that 'Islamic militants had planned to strike simultaneously in India, US, UK and Australia.' Two conspirators, he says, planned to hijack a London-to Bombay flight, but there was no such flight on Sept. 11, so they got on a London to Manchester one instead. 'However the plan eventually failed because all flights were immediately grounded after the attack on the WTC, Afroz's interrorgation report said.' -More from the article -'Investigators said that the Indian part of the plan (flying a plane into the parliament building) was not abandoned after September 11, and that the strike was to take place in November. - "BOMBAY TERRORIST WAS STILL PLANNING PLANE ATTACKS FOR NOVEMBER, " by James Taranto, Wall Street Journal via Rediff.com , Monday, December 10, 2001

The Statesman (India)
December 9, 2001 AL-QAIDA SUSPECT HAS NEVER MET OSAMA
STATESMAN NEWS SERVICE MUMBAI, Dec. 8. Al-Qaida suspect Mohammed Afroz Abdul Razak has told Mumbai Police crime branch interrogators that he took instructions from Maulana Mansoor Ilyas of the Warribee Islamic Centre in Victoria (Australia) and had never come in direct contact with Osama bin Laden.
Investigators suspect that Maulana Mansoor Ilyas has been recruiting youths without telling them that they would be working for the Al-Qaida. Mohammed Afroz Abdul Razak was initially trained to trigger bomb blasts but was later asked by Maulana to undergo a pilots course. He was trained at Royal Victorian Aero Club. Mohammed Afroz Abdul Razak told interrogators that Rs 1 crore was spent on his pilots course. He said two hijackers of Indian Airlines IC-814, Shahid Akhtar and Zahoor Ahmed Mistry, were known to him but by different names Sandy and Zia. They were receiving instructions from Maulana Mansoor Ilyas.
Mohammed Afroz Abdul Razak first came to know about the plan to hijack airliners and carry out suicide attacks in different parts of the world in May 2000 at a lodge called Pakistan Hotel in Hong Kong where he met Maulana Ilyas. Police said the passport entry confirmed this visit to Hong Kong. Mohammed Afroz Abdul Razak said he and other four hijackers were told about their mission to hit the House of Commons at this meeting. He was sent to Cabair College of Air Training at the Cranfield Airport , Bedford, in England in July. Around Rs 30 lakh was spent on advanced training.
Fully equipped to fly large passenger airliners like Boeing 757 or 767, Mohammed Afroz Abdul Razak was given the order to hijack planes on 9 September 2001. He was asked to hijack London-Manchester plane and crash into House of Commons. The ticket to board the flight at Heathrow Airport was issued to him on 10 September. When two planes crashed into the World Trade Centre towers in New York, Mohammed Afroz Abdul Razak was at the London Airport. The mission failed as local aviation authorities cancelled all internal flights.
Two months of intensive interrogation initially baffled the police. As more and more details started pouring in, pieces fitted perfectly in the jigsaw puzzle.
Mohammad Afroz was allegedly a member of a terrorist team which would try to hit the British Parliament. He had been admitted into pilot training based on a false education certificate from Melbourne Flying Academy in Texas and in London for flying Boeing aircraft. Afroz has confessed to police that he frequently visited Australia, USA, United Kingdom, Hong Kong and China between 1997 and 2001. He had also disclosed that suicide squads had been formed by Al-Qaeda network to carry out attacks on World Trade Centre, New York, British Parliament, London, Romal Tower, Australia and Parliament House, New Delhi. http://www.dailyexcelsior.com/01dec15/news.htm
Very little media attention.
"Provocative remarks on terrorists' car"
NEW DELHI, Dec 14, 2001: "This is the property of Ministry of Home Affairs and nobody can stop this car," wrote the terrorists in small-sized letters on the Home Ministry sticker pasted on the front windscreen of the white Ambassador car they used during attack on Parliament House yesterday. "Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L K Advani are Indians and we are going to kill them. They are friends of George Bush and our next target is George Bush," the message read. A police official said there were some spelling mistakes in the message written in English. The car with red beacon light was used by the five terrorists to enter Parliament complex. -------(PTI) http://www.dailyexcelsior.com/01dec15/news.htm

This is a pretty important story. Thanks for filling me in on the details. I cannot imagine why this is not headline news here in the States!
Yes I had read about this, I believe they were going to target the London bridge and a landmark in France.
Thanks for bringing it up- I'd forgotten about this guy.
If you have a ping list put me on it. :)
Thanks.
India Parliament Attack American and Canadian citizens Arrested
SEVEN years? Is anyone else outraged about this? Can we swoop down on him when he is released and re-arrest and try him?
Mary, you be bad.
When Afroze was sentenced two articles were posted at FreeRepublic, one from the Sunday Times of London and one from an Indian news website.
Neither article attracted much attention from FReepers although the importance of the 9/11 plots on London, Melbourne and New Delhi was pointed out as proving the Iraq war had nothing to do with al Qaida attacks on London on 7/7.
