Britain to lift nuclear restrictions against India

London, Aug 11 (PTI) Symbolising the growing bilateral ties, Britain has decided to ease sanctions against India relating to civilian nuclear energy ahead of Prime Minister Tony Blair's visit to New Delhi.

"The government has notified Parliament yesterday about the significant changes in its laws regarding the export of dual-use nuclear technologies to India," a Foreign Office spokesman said today.

The British decision comes close on the heels of the Indo-US nuclear deal paving the way for supply of nuclear fuel to Tarapore and other reactors, ending the three-decade-old freeze.

My view is that this is more important than Bush's offer, however important that is in terms of rhetoric and a new US attitude.

The reason being that Congress could well put the kibbosh on Bush's deal; an alliance between OldColdWarriors, the DemLeft, combined with the Pakistan and China lobbies, could outweigh whatever assets India brings.

But, good for the British.

Good. I have no qualms about giving our Indian friends the ability to vapourise the Muslims.

We in the USA have a few conceited Europhile politicians. But as noticeable in more of our working relationships, you won't see nearly as much condescension from us.

I wonder if the NYT is going to write another opinion lambasting Blair for doing the very same thing that the NYT blasted Bush for getting ready to do.
