Police have absolutely nothing to fear from law-abiding citizens with CCW's.
I also let them know that I am carrying. I have never had them ask for my weapon but, like you, have never had one seen even slightly concerned that I was armed.
I even got out with an officer once (at his bidding), stepped to the rear of the car, and we discussed the events that led up to me being pulled over. (I was speeding)
Had my .45 on my hip under my suit coat.
While I did take extra pains not to present myself as a threat, the officer didn't seem concerned at all.

I had never been asked to surrender my weapon before, either.
However, this officer was quite young, and I'd never met him before (I know the majority of the police in my county). I was only too happy to comply with his request.
A .45??? I have one, but am too small a fellow to conceal it well. My Bersa .380 with glasers will just have to do in a pinch. :)
