Cindy Sheehan's Crowd

It's easy to see why Cindy Sheehan, the 48-year-old mother of a soldier killed in Iraq, has become the new face of the anti-war movement, featured in a New York Times editorial on Tuesday and a Maureen Dowd column yesterday morning. Camped out in Crawford, Texas, near President Bush's ranch, she's a more sympathetic face than a lot of the alternatives. But as sad as Ms. Sheehan's loss is - and we don't belittle it - she has put herself in league with some extreme groups and individuals.

For starters, Ms. Sheehan has been posting on Michael Moore's Web site, writing, "We have such a strong coalition of groups. GSFP, Code Pink, Veterans for Peace, Military Families Speak Out and the Crawford Peace House. I talked with John Conyers today and he wrote a letter to George signed by about 18 other Congress members to request that he meet with me. I also talked to Maxine Waters tonight and she is probably going to be here tomorrow."

It turns out that the Crawford Peace House Web site includes a photo depicting the entire state of Israel as "Palestine," and it carries a link to a report that when Prime Minister Sharon visited Crawford, the "peace house" greeted him with an "800-foot-long banner containing all of the United Nations resolutions that Israel is in violation of." The Crawford Peace House site also features a photo of Eugene Bird, who has suggested that Israeli intelligence was responsible for the abuses at Abu Ghraib.

I feel sorry for her because she lost her son. I also feel sorry for her because she is being used, granted she has allowed herself to be used. But with this bitterness and the bitterness to come when the Whackos move on and dump her, she will be twice as bitter. It's very sad.

I'm sorry, but I find the your argument that Mrs. Jackson's activism is somehow hurting the morale of our troops little more than a straw man. As a retired solider I can tell you that we WANTED the citizens of this country involved and speaking out when our leaders sent us into combat, especially when the war plans were ill conceived and poorly executed - we were the ones getting shot at. As Tom Clancy said in one of his novels, "The private knows instinctively what the general [and politicians] must learn through experience." If the troops morale is low it's not because of Mrs. Hackson it's because they are stretched too thin, and loosing buddies for what many I still maintain contact with believe is a lie...This war is predicated on several lies. The principle lie being that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction. It is hard for a soldier to maintain his/her morale when they know that they are fighting for a lie. Mrs. Jackson is doing the troops and this country a great service: she is exercising her right to free speech. A right that, it seems to me, that you folks would gladly curtail if you had the power...Another quick point.
