Thank you for a reasoned reply Alex.

Having never experienced multi-party government, I guess I have this naive vision of coalitions working together for the best possible outcomes.

Frustration leading to absurdity? ;-)

That about sums it up. But add to that, and I think this is true in America too, increasingly partisan politics. Things put forth by particular groups and people will provoke knee jerk reactions in many.

When there are coalitions, this is when they break down. Both sides blame the other.

Which leads to further increasingly partisan politics and bad feelings. Which is when the name calling and paranoia starts.

And that's when things really start breaking down...

Then regional differences start seeping in. And people begin voting as regional blocs, which begin to coalesce, and self-purify and regulate.

Then the real fun starts. ;)

It's not a great situation. More than two parties is a good idea. More than 4? It gets too complicated and divisive.
