The casting is all but complete for America's next big political thriller. The starring role was always going to Hillary Clinton, the former first lady, who next year must fight to retain her seat representing New York in the US Senate. However, now we have the person who is likely to play opposite her. Her name is Jeanine Pirro.
You don't need any trailers to tell you that this will be the blockbuster of 2006. It will have a monster budget - some expect this to be the most expensive Senate race in history - and a gripping subplot too. (A quick clue here: Hillary-for-President 2008.) And then there is Ms Pirro, charismatic,outspoken and popular.
The formal announcement from Ms Pirro, 54, just completing her third term as the District Attorney for Westchester County, just north of New York City, is expected today. However, she let the cat out of the bag to reporters earlier this week. She wants to be the Republican to take on Hillary next year and she means to win.
That may be a little ambitious, of course. Near the end of her first term, Ms Clinton has attained considerable popularity, even in the northern parts of the state, which are normally considered more conservative. A recent poll suggested that in a race with Ms Pirro, she would prevail by 63 per cent to 29 per cent.
On the other hand, the vote is still one year away. Republican strategists in Washington have been prodding Ms Pirro to take the Senator on. They do not completely rule out that she could win and score the political upset of the decade. Failing that, they calculate that she, more than anyone else available, may be able to wound Mrs Clinton sufficiently to slow her momentum going into 2008 and the next race for the White House.
For her part, Mrs Clinton, 57, is saying little. She especially refuses to speak about her presidential ambitions, insisting she is focused only on the Senate race. Yet, it is widely accepted that she is better positioned than any other Democrat at the moment to win the nomination to run for the White House next time around.
At least two other Republicans have expressed interested in challenging Mrs Clinton, which could force Ms Pirro into competing in a primary race first. One of the other would-be candidates is Edward Cox, a Manhattan lawyer and the son-in-law of the late former president Richard Nixon. But now that her hat is in the ring, Ms Pirro is almost certain to get her party's nod.
Already, Ms Pirro is probing what may be the biggest weakness in Mrs Clinton's re-election platform - her inability or unwillingness to close her presidential options by pledging to serve all six years of a second Senate term if voters send her back to Washington.
"When Mrs Clinton first came to us and said she wanted to be a New Yorker, she asked New York to put out a welcome mat and we did," Ms Pirro said in a statement. "But now she wants us to re-elect her even though she won't promise to serve out her term and wants to use us as a springboard to the presidency. She's asking us to become her doormat."
She amplified the theme talking later with reporters. "There is only one woman who really wants the job and who is looking to serve out the term - and that's me," Ms Pirro said. "Hillary Clinton is not running to serve the people of New York. We are a way station in her run for the presidency."
Ms Pirro may be relatively unknown on the national stage, but in New York State she has long been a bright, if sometimes controversial, star in her party. As chief prosecutor in Westchester County (home to Hillary and Bill) she has made a name for herself combating domestic violence and pursuing sexual offenders. She has also carved out a niche as a legal pundit on Fox News.
However, she faces some obstacles, such as the legal difficulties of her husband who recently served an 11-month prison sentence for tax fraud. Perhaps more importantly, she is a moderate Republican who supports the death penalty but is also pro-choice on abortion and supportive of gay rights. This could cost her the backing of the more traditional conservatives.

I'm looking forward to a possible debate between Hillary & Pirro. I'd bet good money that Pirro will wipe the floor with Hillary. Hillary is NOT good at thinking on her feet, and she has no patience (or soul for that matter).
It is very difficult to define a "MATCH FOR HITLERY CLINTON" since when you have done NOTHING, are as anti-American, are as SOCIALIST, are as big a liar, are as evil and deceitful, well you can find a million matches for Hitlery in any drug-addict, hippie-infested, anti-American protest march.
Lots of them -- that is why her pursuit of the U.S. presidency is SUCH A JOKE and represents an unexcelled level of arrogance.
But are New Yorkers discerning enough to care?
When the Hildabeast and Jeanine get to attacking each others husbands and their problems from the past , it may very well turn into the cat fight of the century .. Can't wait !!!
I think some New Yorkers are discerning enough to care, especially upstate. They might start caring more if Ms. Pirro keeps saying in her NY accent that carpetbagger Hillary doesn't give a hoot about NY, and she is only using the seat to further her own agenda -- taking the white house in 2008. I want to see Pirro nail Hillary down on exactly what her plans are for the future. People should care when Ms. Pirro talks about the promises Hillary made to the people of NY and just how many of them she has kept. Ms. Pirro is a seasoned prosecutor who has been REALLY practicing law, putting the bad guys in jail, and protecting children from criminals for many years. Hillary has spent the better part of the last 30 years practicing some corporate law, backing her husband's political career, destroying anybody who got in her way and scheming to gain back the political power she lost when her husband's terms were over. Oh, and if Hillary dares to say anything about Pirro's husband, she'd better watch out. Pirro is not one to take it lying down. She'll hit back harder. When the two of them (Hillary and her witchy, saggy, baggy self & the slender attractive Pirro) are put side by side and have a chance to debate, I think more people will think twice about Hillary. I sure HOPE so.
I think Pirro should also use another angle in her campaign and that is that Clinton is running as a beard for Andrew Cuomo, who likely couldn't get elected.
Clinton expects to win and expects Spitzer will be elected governor. She gets elected to Senate and steps down in a year to run for President. Spitzer names the odious Cuomo, to whom the Clintons owe a debt for his hack work at HUD.
Guy can't win in New York because his wife, a Kennedy, ran off with some turd.

I agree with you, but just what has Hillary been learning quickly and working so hard for? She doesn't really want to be a Senator from NY. She picked NY because it has the most electoral votes, is a liberal state and it was a good spot for her to launch a presidential campaign. The woman may be smart and hard working, but she's got no personality and no soul. She is artificial at best. The smooth Janine Pirro will have Hillary shrieking soon enough. (I hope)
Hillary's war team will resort to what they always have....a scorched earth political approach...watch for the smears....

I'm suspicious about this entire situation, due to the
wall-to-wall coverage of it by the Legacy Media. Compare
and contrast with LM coverage of Air Enron, or even the
UN scandals.
It's almost like Hillary picked an opponent she can

you are right, but the 08 Presidency is Hillary's to lose. The MSM and the evil left will spew out the most amazing amount of propaganda in World history. Hillary's machine will make Goebbels (!sp!) look like an amateur. By the time the election is in full swing, the MSM will be relentless in their attacks on Reps. The MSM will make Hillary be the savior of the US and the world. Sadly, most women will fall for the "vote for a woman" c*ap. It will be disgusting. Believe me, the 08 election is hers to lose. Evil is very powerful and she is pure evil. She would sell her soul and daughter's life to be President. God help this Republic if she wins.

Why should New Yorkers care? Politically the two candidates are the same person. Why Pirro chooses to run as a Republican makes no sense. I'm guessing she couldn't win the Democrat primary and then won general election because democrats were too busy sabotaging each other to worry much about the Republican (i.e., the Mitt Romney explanation).
Plus the Hildabeast has always been protected with media questions.
