"breeding evil"
A teenager talks (www.teenagertalks.blogspot.com) | 8-10-05 | William Ortel

“Breeding Evil” is the headline of this week’s London Economist magazine. What is the subject matter? With such a dramatic headline, surely it must be something like an expose on terrorist camps, or perhaps the mechanism by which new suicide bombers are recruited, or perhaps even how bush’s treatment of the China/Taiwan issue will lead to problems down the road; however, what’s the story really about? Its subtitle is “The real impact of videogames.”

While this article concludes with a profound statement: that the argument over videogames is nothing more than the argument over Rock n’ Roll in the fifties, or waltz dancing in the 19th century, the fact that politicians are even getting involved in such an inconsequential aspect of our life when there are death camps, nuclear bombs, and the boogeyman out to get us.

Perhaps the issue that I’m having is an issue of boundaries. The government needs to learn that, barring certain extreme circumstances; its jurisdiction ends at the door of an American house, because it’s up to a family - not Hillary Clinton - what kids are watching. Any argument in which it is proven logical for the federal government to intrude on our lifestyle further than it currently does must start by proving that families have no power, or alternatively that they do not exist. That’s not happening; ask people “who was most influential in your life?”, they’ll most likely say either “mom”, “dad”, or another family member. To quote my mother: “Argument over, end of discussion.” So, how do we solve this problem? Education. I’ve actually had lengthy discussions with people who think all videogames are just as pornographic in nature as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – the game which all this fuss is being made about. One man I spoke to on the subway even wanted to ban them all. In the end, I just have to agree with the economist’s writer. This is a generation gap issue. In 30 years an ex-videogamer politician is going to be giving a press conference about how the next fad is as evil as satan’s left hand. The message? Hillary, Choke on your microphone, hopefully not being able to eat will make you lose a couple pounds.

It put things in perspective. Great read.

Choking on evil?

Well. Liberals aren't opposed to that. I mean, there's Monica...
