Not that it matters--it's the institutional problems that caused all this, seems to me. That's one thing I wish W was more eager to do, rip the heck out of State, CIA and FBI and start fresh. But it does seem that he IS getting there, finally.
Robert S. Mueller,III was sworn in as FBI Director on September 4, 2001. His confirmation hearings began on July 30, 2001.
Thomas Pickering was acting director until Mueller succeeded Louis Freeh. Freeh was director 1993-2001, and for some unknown (to me) reason, Freeh has never received the criticism he so richly deserves for FBI failures under his watch. If Freeh couldn't protect the FBI's integrity under Clinton, he should have resigned years earlier. Under Freeh, the FBI was (I believe), thoroughly corrupted and deballed!
