Runaway Bride Mows Lawn of Gov't Building
Fox News ^ | 08-09-05 | Fox

Instead of cutting out of town, runaway bride Jennifer Wilbanks is cutting lawns. Wearing an orange community service vest and a baseball cap with the slogan "Life is good," Wilbanks did part of her court-ordered community service Tuesday for lying to police after she ran off days before her wedding. "I'm doing well. ... I'm getting there," a sweating Wilbanks told a throng of reporters and photographers after her mower died out in the tall, wet grass. "I need to get back to work. I don't want to get into trouble." But her mower kept sputtering out, prompting her to repeatedly yank on the pull cord to get it started again. After the eighth time, she let out a huge sigh. In all, Wilbanks was ordered to do 120 hours of service, and she has already completed 24 by scrubbing toilets in probation offices, picking up trash and washing public vehicles. "She's a hard worker. She didn't take advantage of anything. She did more work than most people," said 17-year-old Michael Powell, who has cleaned bathrooms and offices with Wilbanks while working off his own sentence of 80 hours of community service for an offense he declined to disclose. When he first met Wilbanks, Powell was one of the few who had no idea who she was. "I said 'Whoa, what's a girl like you having to do 120 hours of community service?' She said, 'I told a lie." "I said, 'It must have been a pretty big lie,' and she laughed, saying 'Haven't you heard of the runaway bride?"'

Wilbanks has been undergoing mental health treatment. In an interview with Katie Couric shown on NBC in June, Mason said maybe the couple will get married "one day." "But we don't know the answer to that question yet," he added.

She isn't at a fashion show, she is cutting grass and doing manual labor.

Saw a video snippet earlier. She looked the part of a sulking child intentionally doing a half arse job because the world is so unfair. Either that or she had never touched a lawnmower in her life. I suspect both.

She's gotten a whale of a lot of publicity on local Atlanta TV stations, not to mention Fox and CNN, over the grass mowing caper.

I think there were enough reporters around to have munched the grass down. But she seemed to be a pretty good sport about the whole thing.

Some illegal performing services Americans won't do.

But she seemed to be a pretty good sport about the whole thing. ...indeed.. i think shes matured enough to understand certain consequences when anyone acts on something that is unfair, that's why shes doing that unusual task (on her part).. a well learned lesson for her and for other ladies who might be thinkin the same thing...

Either that or she had never touched a lawnmower in her life. ... with her looks IMO she's not used with that kind of job but i appreciate the way faced all of these consequences, just imagine her story being published almost worldwide... she's one heck of a courageous babe...

I understand that at the last moment without the knowledge of her future(?)husband, she switched her bridal registry from Pottery Barn to Greyhound.

The way this woman has been treated by the press and on these threads is a disgusting indecency to humanity and demeaning to the conservative movement.

This woman made a mistake, as many of us do in our lifetime, and she's now paying its consequences. It's not as if she committed some dreadful crime.

Leave her alone and let her learn from her mistakes.

Yes, I wish her happiness and many years together with her future husband, John.

A mistake? No dreadful crime? I wonder how many investigations were placed on the back burner or not investigated at all because the local cops were so busy looking for her? How many cops were tied up looking for her abductors in other states? She got off WAY too lightly. Repaying part of the cost? Mommy and Daddy did that for her. If the guy goes ahead and marries this woman he will be sorry at some point in his life that he did not dump her like a bad habit. It is a real good sign that he has not married her yet and I predict he will not when he has had time to think about it. By her actions she has proven herself to be very unstable mentally. A very poor marriage choice.

Wow! A voice of reason!

I agree. Too many FReepers lashed out way too harshly at this woman. Many wanted her to pay the costs of the manhunt which was launched after she disappeared. What most don't seem to get is that she committed no crime (at that point) and did nothing to start a manhunt. She bolted because she got cold feet.

Her crime came only after she was found. That's when she lied. Now, she may be liable for the cost of the hunt for the people she said had kidnapped her, but not for anything before that.
