Liberal yakker Al Franken blasted the man who founded his Air America radio network as "a crook" on Monday - even as he laughed off the financial scandal that continues to dog his broadcast.
After weeks of on-air silence about an $875,000 loan that Air America finagled from a Bronx community group that serves poor kids and Alzheimers patients, Franken was finally forced to discuss the scandal when a caller asked him to explain.
"Here's the deal," the Air America host said. "The first guy who was chairman of the board of Air America - Evan Cohen - was a crook, it turns out. I mean, I guess that's the only way to put it."
Explaining Cohen's role in ripping off the kids' club, Franken suddenly turned giddy.
"He borrowed $875,000," he said, erupting in laughter. "I don't know why they did it and I don't know where the money went."
Franken said he "imagines" that the funds earmarked for childrens' programs were instead "used for operations" at Air America, which was strapped for cash at the time.
"[Cohen] was robbing Peter to pay Paul," he explained.
I didn't even know they did news - or was it radio. I have a difficult time with my temper when I tune in communist media.

Here's how to get the job done. Because some of the NYC money given Gloria Wise involved federal funds, the The U. S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York ought to start an investigation.

NOTE: Libstripper did an incisive analysis of the fraud that should be used when approaching authorities, as follows: There's a lot here for the feds to get involved in. First of all, there's a good chance that a lot of the money NYC doled out to Gloria Wise was Federal money. If so, it's Federal money that was being stolen. The IRS has a lot to be interested in. Gloria Wise is a 501(c)(3) public charity.
Its directors and officers are prohibited by the U. S. Internal Revenue Code from engaging in self dealing. Evan Montvel Cohen, the development director of Gloria Wise, was also the founder of Air America; he worked for and authorized the $800,000 of "loans" to Air America.
Even if they were bona fide loans, that would still raise serious issues of self dealing as far as Cohen and Gloria Wise are concerned and, at a minimum, would jeopardize Gloria Wise's tax exempt status. However, it's highly doubtful that the $875,000 was ever loaned by Gloria Wise to either Air America or Cohen; rather, it was probably stolen.
As of now there's no indication that Gloria Wise took any of the normal due diligence steps generally necessary to support such a loan, including: (a) obtaining a business plan from Air America, (b) getting a promissory note at a market interest rate, (c) obtaining a security agreement, and (d) getting personal guarantees from Air America's principals. Absent such conventional loan paper work, it looks strongly like Gloria Wise embezzled the money from NYC grants and Air America knowingly, through Cohen, its agent and founder, stole the money from Gloria Wise and used it.
Since NYC probably got a lot of that money initially from the Federal government, The U. S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York ought to start an ivestigation.
The situation is just about as bad with Cohen personally, since it's likely that Gloria Wise provided him with medical insurance to cover his cancer treatments and the $35,000 "loan" was actually a personal embezzlement.

The NYC Department of Investigations is also looking into diversion of funds from the Pathways for Youth Boys & Girls Club, an affiliate of the Gloria Wise club. According to the web site, Pathways has requested $206,872 for its Century Community Learning Centers Program grant award under the No Child Left Behind Act.......President Bush's favored program. The US Department of Education better be examining that request very carefully.

Aside from city, state and federal grants, Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club receives the generous support of benefactors including the Charles Hayden Foundation, Con Edison, the Butler Foundation, Metropolitan Life, Pinkerton Foundation, Calder Foundation, and New York Community Trust.
These organizations also need to be investigated to determine is money-laundering was taking place, whereby monies earmarked for Gloria Wise were partially deposited in Gloria Wise accounts, and the remainder fraudulently converted the deposited offshore out of sight of the IRS, SEC, and US bank laws.
The IRS has received numerous complaints that non-profits---particularly foundations----are being used to run just about every kind of off-the-books accounting fraud. Concerns have also been raised that the IRS has been stymied in its efforts to penalize organizations’ falsified tax documents and official financial instruments to cover-up theft, and the failure of individuals to report stolen money as income.
Nonprofits, institutes, think tanks, authorities, trusts, unoins, and foundations, have the potential for, and may, in fact, be major money laundering conduits. They wrap themselves in high-sounding causes while perhaps engaging in activities that are fraudulent and benefit insiders at the expense of law-abiding Americans.
