County Takes West Nile Fight To The Air Aerial Spraying Over Sacramento To Begin Monday Night
POSTED: 6:56 am PDT August 8, 2005 UPDATED: 6:44 pm PDT August 8, 2005
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento Vector Control officials Monday will begin aerial spraying over a large part of Sacramento County in an effort to fight mosquitoes and the West Nile virus.
A 71,000-acre area from Interstate 5 to Citrus Heights will be sprayed beginning at 8 p.m. The spraying is expected to last until midnight.
The pesticide that will be sprayed is a pyrethins, derived from chrysanthemums. It is the same chemical found in flea and tick spray.
Officials said it will be distributed in such small amounts residents probably won't even see the spray and that it will not harm pets.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, in small doses the pesticide is not an unreasonable risk to human health.

Vector control officials said pesticide spraying is a last resort for a problem that is reaching epidemic proportions.
"Generally about five mosquito's per 1,000 is considered epidemic. Right now we are finding some traps where one in 10 mosquitos are infected with west nile virus," Sacramento-Yolo Vector Control's David Brown said.
But Ruben Guzman -- a former member of the Public Health Advisory Board for Sacramento County -- said even a small amount of pyrethrins can have side effects.
"Being exposed to that kind of pesticide ... it doesn't make sense to me. From a public health perspective, I don't think that is the answer to the problem," Guzman said.
Vector Control officials said while they are not doing anything that is not recommended by the Centers For Disease Control or the Environmental Protection Agency, they do recommend people stay indoors and keep pets inside while the spraying is taking place.
Well, one thing I must say I'm proud of as a Californian - we ain't wimps about aerial spraying. Heck, even Moonbeam did it for the Medfly! LOL ...
Oh, oh, all those folks in Rio Linda had better be informed by Rush Limbaugh, since he seems to be the only one that can explain things to them...
The local media is making a circus of the issue.
Duck!
Of course, then-Governor Jerry Brown had to back down opposing the aerial spraying when the USDA threatened to ban the shipment of fruit from California to any other state or exported out of the country.
Art Bell fans will be in a panic calling in reporting "chem trails" in the sky -
Does anyone know the name of the company,
or the name of the pilot doing the poisoning?
Perhaps the state should offer gas masks at cutrate,
for those at risk.
So much for the hundreds of dollars folks spent on Mosquito Magnets, eh?
