"It is stunning that any group would put together an ad with the false and outrageous claims that NARAL has today. By attempting to assert that Judge Roberts supports shameful criminal acts, NARAL has shown how far they will go to slander a good man for political gain. Organizations like NARAL that go to these lengths only serve to denigrate the confirmation process and are drastically out-of-touch with the American people."
-- Ken Mehlman, RNC Chairman
NARAL AD CLAIM
NARAL ANNOUNCER: "Seven Years Ago A Bomb Destroyed A Woman's Health Clinic In Birmingham, Alabama."
EMILY LYONS, FORMER DIRECTOR OF NURSING AT THE NEW WOMAN ALL WOMEN HEALTHCARE CLINIC: "The Bomb Ripped My Clinic. I Almost Lost My Life. I Will Never Be The Same."
NARAL ANNOUNCER: "Supreme Court Nominee John Roberts Filed Court Briefs Supporting Violent Fringe Groups And A Convicted Clinic Bomber."
LYONS: "I Am Determined To Stop This Violence, So I'm Speaking Out." (NARAL, Television Ad, 8/8/05)
THE FACTS
Roberts Has Written Violence Is Inexcusable And Criminal, No Matter Circumstances:
"[Judge Roberts] Wrote That The Bomber Of An Abortion Clinic Should Not Receive Any Special Consideration For A Pardon." (Jo Becker and Michael Grunwald, "In Private Practice, Roberts's Record Is Mixed," The Washington Post, 8/5/05)
Roberts: "No Matter How Lofty Or Sincerely Held The Goal, Those Who Resort To Violence To Achieve It Are Criminals." (Jo Becker and Michael Grunwald, "In Private Practice, Roberts's Record Is Mixed," The Washington Post, 8/5/05)
John Roberts Was A Government Lawyer Advocating The Position Of His Client, The First Bush Administration.
The First Bush Administration Did Not Defend Any Actions Of Operation Rescue Or Any Other Party In The Case. It Simply Filed A Brief In The Case Arguing That Protests Did Not Meet The Established Criteria For Discrimination.
The Supreme Court, In A 6-3 Decision, Supported The Arguments Made In Roberts' Amicus Brief For The Bray Vs. Alexandria Women's Health Clinic Case. (Bray vs. Alexandria Women's Health Clinic, 506 U.S. 263 [1993])
NARAL AD CLAIM
NARAL ANNCR: "Call Your Senators. Tell Them To Oppose John Roberts. America Can't Afford A Justice Whose Ideology Leads Him To Excuse Violence Against Other Americans." (NARAL, Television Ad, 8/8/05)
THE FACTS
In 2003, Roberts Received Unanimous Support When He Was Confirmed By The Senate:
"The Senate Judiciary Committee Approved [Roberts'] Appointment To The Appellate Court In 2003 By A Lopsided Vote ... And The Senate Confirmed The Choice In A Unanimous Voice Vote." (Adam Nagourney, "Bush's Strategy For Court: Disarm The Opposition," The New York Times, 7/20/05)
Democrat Senators Have Voiced Support Of Roberts:
· Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE): "I Like What I See About Roberts In Terms Of Personality, His Temperament. He Doesn't Seem To Be An Absolute Ideologue." (CBS' "Face The Nation," 7/24/05)
. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA): "Yes, He Does Believe In Precedent. And, He Is Very Cautious And He's Very Studious. And In No Way, Shape Or Form Do I Believe He Puts Any Ideology Before The Law, Nor Do I Believe He Would Be An Activist In The Law." (MSNBC's, "Hardball," 7/25/05)
NARAL Is Out Of The Mainstream:
NARAL Opposes Bans On Partial Birth Abortions. "For years, opponents of choice have been using inflammatory rhetoric about so-called 'partial-birth' abortion. Despite anti-choice propaganda depicting nearly full-term fetuses, these bans are crafted broadly and would prohibit different types of procedures before fetuses are viable." (NARAL Website, "Bans On Abortion Procedures," www.prochoiceamerica.org Accessed 8/8/05)
NARAL At Odds With Majority Of Americans, Who Support Banning Partial-Birth Abortion. "The newly enacted ban on partial-birth abortion, signed into law yesterday by President Bush, is likely to meet with broad public approval. In Gallup's latest poll, 68% of the public says the procedure should be illegal, while only 25% say it should be legal." (Lydia Saad, "Americans Agree With Banning 'Partial-Birth Abortion,'" The Gallup Organization, 11/6/03)
Forty-Eight Republicans And Sixteen Democrats Voted For Ban On Partial Birth Abortions. (S. 3, CQ Vote #51: Passed 64-33: R 48-3; D 16-29; I 0-1, 3/13/03)
NARAL Opposed "Unborn Victims Of Violence Act" Also Known As Laci's Law. (NARAL, "NARAL Pro-Choice America Delivers More Than 130,000 Petitions Opposing 'Unborn Victims Of Violence Act' To Senators," Press Release, 3/23/04)
Majority Of Americans Support Unborn Victims Of Violence Act. A Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll conducted July 15-16, 2003 of 900 registered voters nationwide with a margin of error of +/-3% found that 79% of Americans believe prosecutors should be able to charge an attacker with the murder of an unborn child if a violent physical attack on a woman has resulted in the child's death. (Fox News/Opinion Dynamics Poll, 7/15-16/03, +/-3%)
Forty-Eight Republicans And Thirteen Democrats Voted For Unborn Victims Of Violence Act. (H.R. 1997, CQ Vote #63: Passed 61-38: R 48-2; D 13-35; I 0-1, 3/25/04)
NARAL Longtime Opponent Of President Bush:
NARAL Said President "Has Played Politics With Women's Reproductive Health Throughout His Presidency." (NARAL Website, "Fight Back Against Bush's Anti-Birth Control Policy," http://www.naral.org/takeaction/EC_prescription.cfm, Accessed 8/8/05)
NARAL Backed Punkvoter.com "A Coalition That Has Enlisted Nearly 200 Bands To Get Out The Anti-Bush Vote." "Punkvoter.com is backed by a contingent of tax-exempt liberal interest groups, including NARAL Pro-Choice America and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals." (Steve Miller, "Punk Rock The Vote," The Washington Times, 3/3/04)
"NARAL Pro-Choice America And Punkvoter.com Have Teamed Up To Fight The Bush Administration's Aggressive Efforts To Put Government Into Our Private Lives -- And To Let Young People Know What They Can Do To Stop Them From Rolling Back Our Rights." (NARAL Website, "NARAL Pro-Choice America Goes Punk!," www.prochoiceamerica.org/, Accessed 8/8/05)
NARAL Also Opposed President Bush In 2000. (Laura Meckler, "Abortion Rights Group To Air Ad Against Bush," The Associated Press, 5/2/00)
Kate Michelman, NARAL President: "There Is Going To Be No Right To Choose In A Decade If We Elect George Bush President." (Laura Meckler, "Abortion Rights Group To Air Ad Against Bush," The Associated Press, 5/2/00)
A Product Of The RNC Research Department
Why, oh why, doesn't the GOP put together a first rate television ad explaining exactly what NARAL does and stands for? Most Americans have no idea.
Lies are the only thing the lunatic left has going for it!
The left has no truth or good ideas.
The only thing they are left with is lie and smear.
Why, Oh Why, Doesn't The GOP Learn That Not Every Word Should Be Capitalized In A Press Release?
It drives me nuts.
It has gotten them
more than a little success
over the decades . . .
Well the NYT was caught pantz-down doing NARAL's bidding, so now they have to go out there themselves.
With NARAL it's a pap smear
"Why, oh why, doesn't the GOP put together a first rate television ad explaining exactly what NARAL does and stands for? Most Americans have no idea."
National Assocation of Repugnant Abortion Lovers?
Apparently, NARAL may have been the ones shopping around the idea of trying to open the Roberts adoption records, which the NYT happily took up.
NARAL is upset the children weren't aborted.
Good Point. Excellent Point. It Is One That Bears Repeating Over And Over Again. You Are To Be Commended For Your Studious Attention To Grammatical Propriety. Bump To The Top!
(I'm Cracking Myself Up!)
Well .. I wouldn't put anything past these people.
I've seen a positive ad for Judge Roberts, too. Since when do they run campaign ads for SC nominees?
LOL! I'm normally not a grammar Nazi, but the all-caps thing drives me bonkers. All the press releases from the RNC come out that way. I wonder if it's something in their HTML coding or something? It's bizarre.
Mehlman is so much classier than Psycho Dean
This is better than nothing, but the RNC really needs to take the gloves off on this one, and demand that TV stations refuse to run this false and slanderous ad. I know if I see it on any of my local TV stations, they are going to get an earful from me! TV stations refuse false advertisements all the time. This one is blatantly false, and its falsehoods have been documented - see today's Bench Memos on Natonal Review Online. Nobody of any political stripe should be allowed to poison the airwaves with complete lies like this!
