Iran resumes nuclear work; the West scrambles. IAEA emergency meeting Tuesday

Iran's resumption of uranium conversion Monday is set to be taken up at an emergency meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency Tuesday - a move that could result in referral of the Iranian nuclear issue to the United Nations Security Council.

The council, in turn, could set in motion an international effort to isolate Iran politically and economically, something Iran has long wished to avoid.

The flurry of activity over Iran followed the Islamic Republic's terse rejection over the weekend of a European offer of economic incentives, including help with nuclear-energy generation, in exchange for verifiably giving up all nuclear activities that could lead to a bomb. The events represent a ratcheting up of a confrontation with the West that some officials in the United States have long considered inevitable, given their assumption that Iran is determined to join the nuclear club.

Another major test for the UN: are they willing and able to tackle tough issues, or just roll over for Iran.

A huge diplomatic failure.

I wonder what UN officials will start getting kickbacks from the Iranians now?

Start, what do you mean "start"?

They probably have been getting kickbacks from Iran all along and continue to do so.

Well, the EU was in charge of the negotiations, so it's not a big surprise. They don't have the will to get tough and Iran knows it.

But even with Bolton there, all the other countries just want to lie down and hope the Mullah's blow them up last.

Just look at how the UN kept ignoring Saddam's infractions.

I think that if the UN doesn't step up to this, we most definitely should withdraw from it and kick them out of the US.

Re: Maybe we could send Jimmy Carter to negotiate!

In honor of the good Mr. Carter, we should burn a few helos in the Iranian desert, and roast marshmellows, as our AC130s Spectors, B2s, F117s, Raptors scream overhead toward Tehran.

Wouldn't it be a shame if Iran's nuclear facility accidentally blew up.

And send Bill/Hill also; I'm sure Hill would run up to his wife and give her a big hug and kiss, just like she did to Arafat's wife....slobs that they are!

Behind all the diplo-speak you just KNOW the mullahs are laughing their behinds off at the euro-weenies. There is no chance, none, zero, zip, nada zilch ZERO chance that Iran makes a deal with the EU and sticks to it. They have no reason to. They know the EU is all talk.

Great. Another resolution that we try to enforce and for which we get no support.

A huge diplomatic failure.

A month ago I'd have agreed with you. I *think* that John Bolton is going to cut the crap that's been occuring in the UN for so long. I hope my assessment and opinion is on target.... If Bolton is anything like Cheney or Rummy, conditions within the UN will change dramtically.

"They know the EU is all talk."

Exactly.

And the situation is grave, because now there is a hardliner as president of Iran. Again, the US has to step up and take care of it, while the EU is not only not helping, but will be hindering and attacking us.

From another article:

Crisis looms as Iran resumes nuke work

http://www.thestandard.com.hk/stdn/std/World/GH09Wd02.html

The crisis has escalated since Iran's ultra-conservative President Mahmood Ahmadinejad took office last week, with the new leader Monday putting a fellow hardliner in charge of the nuclear dossier.

Ali Larijani, a former boss of state-run media, who has distinguished himself by his intransigency over Iran's nuclear ambitions, would soon take up the post, a government spokesman said.

Larijani replaces Hassan Rowhani, who has managed to maintain dialogue with the West through thick and thin over the last two years, and his appointment will worry some Western negotiators.

Larijani has described giving up Iran's right to uranium enrichment in exchange for EU incentives as like swapping ``a pearl for a sweet.''

Iran's conservative-controlled parliament had demanded that uranium conversion resume ahead of today's meeting of the IAEA governors, outside the watchdog's supervision if necessary.

It seems like you're late to the party. In retrospect, we should have never been in the UN in the first place.
