How is having to turn the lights on an hour earlier going to save energy? Not being a morning person, I'm very cranky about this. My own preference would be to end DST at the end of September.

I'm not either. I'm retired and get up around 9am. I like the idea of another hour of daylight in my time clock.
For just the reason you stated! Think about it: fewer people are up early in the day than at the dinner hour. Fewer people =less energy. It makes a LOT of sense.

6:30 sunsets starting in September. Yuck! Give me every bit of evening light I can get. Light is wasted if I'm just eating breakfast and driving to work.
