Apparently she didn't have a very good relationship with her son, or didn't listen to him very well. I bet he knew what he was doing over there, and tried to tell her over and over.
I just heard a military recruiter say on our local radio station, that many of these (then) kids, prior to 9-11, enlisted for two common reasons: one of them, for the educational benefits, and the other...to get away from Mom.
