That and it kept the Soviets from occupying part of Japan.

The same p*ssants who, if it came to invading Japan, would have called for environmental impact studies for the landing beaches, sensitivity training in multiculturalism for the landing troops, and further endless negotiations, before declaring that they wouldn't fight in a war to establish U.S hegemony, and a U.S takeover of Japanese rice wine.

The left is not happy about us dropping the bomb because it was American lives saved. The left is unhappy about it, because it thwarted Soviet expansion. The Soviet Union never got to take over any of the Japanese islands. The US monopoly of the atomic bomb through the late '40s and overwhelming nuclear superiority in the '50s allowed the US to check any further Soviet expansion into western Europe without the US and western Europeans having to maintain conventional military expenditures and mobiliztion on the level of WWII.

The left of today is not happy about it. The left of 1945 had no objection, as far as I know. It was when it became possible that nuclear weapons might be used against the Soviet Union that the leftists called for disarmament - our disarmament, of course.
