I don't understand though... France is not a military member of NATO.
They take part in political branch of NATO not the Military one!

They aren't an active military member. In fact the French were taking part in the operations in the Adriatic. I was there. The Brits, the French and the US all had a carrier their. It was a bit tight.
The French refused to talk to anyone and kept sending their F-8s toward us (coming back off the beach), supersonic with their transponders off. The second day we almost splashed one. Our Admiral sent the French a very direct message telling them that if they didn't comply by sending us their airplan, we were going to shoot them down the next day.
They sent us their airplan.
The Brits on the other hand were a joy to work with. They dropped off a ham dinner for our captain on Easter (it was a live pig let lose on the flight deck).
