DORAL, Fla. - (KRT) - He has been rebuked by the Vatican, castigated by Congress and slandered on the Internet, but Michael Schiavo was welcomed as a hero Friday by a state organization whose members make end-of-life decisions for people unable to make them for themselves.
The Florida State Guardianship Association bestowed its Guardian of the Year Award on Schiavo for carrying out his wife's wishes not to be kept alive artificially despite a drumbeat of withering criticism.
In a rare public appearance, Schiavo, 42, modestly accepted the award at the association's 18th annual conference at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa west of Miami.
"As you know," he said, "I'm not much of a speechmaker. I don't talk much. But on behalf of my wife Theresa, I thank you."
Association members, most of whom are appointed by judges to represent people who have been declared incapacitated, acknowledged Schiavo was a controversial choice and they anticipate a backlash. After all, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush joined world leaders from the president to the pope in aligning themselves with Bob and Mary Schindler, the couple who fought their son-on-law's effort to remove the feeding tube that kept their severely brain-damaged daughter alive for 15 years.
But, group members said, Michael Schiavo's unwavering commitment to honoring his wife's wishes in the face of public scrutiny and enmity embodied the professionalism and compassion with which court-appointed guardians quietly carry out their duties every day.
"We see a lot of situations where family steps away," said association president-elect Michelle Kenney, a care manager and professional guardian in Broward County. "He stuck by. He didn't walk away."
Added past president Joan Nelson Hook, an attorney from New Port Richey: "He was an ordinary guardian who carried out his duties in extraordinary ways."

Excellent !
A COMFORTABLE option??? No, I suppose being starved and dehydrated wouldn't be comfortable.
when you quote someone, you cite the quote. even the most rabid of liberal journalists knows that. you don't send someone off on search engine hunt to do your homework.
regards.
I know several decent, professional people who's experiences with Florida DFS has been a total nightmare.
Florida is a very sick place. I'll bet I've posted those words a thousand times if I've posted them once.
I'm not sure what this claim, and the bit of calculation that follows it, has to do with anything.
No WAY is that official.
I have volunteered as a guardian in the past.
This is not a mandatory organization.
In fact I bet most Guardians do not even know they exist.
Hi old friend, Good to see you back. I've thought of you (and prayed for you) often. Stay well, God be with you.
Holyscroller!!!!!!!!!!!! I love you!!!!!!!!!! Thanks you!
Sheila :)
I can't tell you the abuse I have seen by CPS. It almost seems like they make it their business to go after normal, decent parents and ignore the real offenders. It's scary.
Never, ever get involved in CPS in FL. They are power mad nanny state liberals waiting to destroy families. They hate homeschooling, people of faith and normal nuclear families. They may say, "Oh, that's not true" to that statement, but I have seen it too often. The proof is in the fruit.
I have personal experience with them prosecuting 3 close friends. Every one was an excellent family just dealing at the time with a severe stress. Defending themselves legally drained their resources and damaged the children.
Every case was dropped, because, finally, they were proved to be the witchhunts they really were. But it makes you want to cry, watching the state abuse of these powerless, innocent people. Heaven help the accused parent that can't afford a good lawyer.
I have seen it too many times. Thank God my kids are adults now. I have one friend that was actually told that if she didn't divorce her husband (of 30 years) that not only would her kids be taken away, but charges would be brought against her.
Can't think of it right this minute, but somewhere in the Bible is a verse about
'calling evil good and good evil.'
This brings that to mind.
USaid: 'Wife Killers-R-Us convention'
Precisely.
Isaiah 5:20
Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.
"Other honoreees at the annual Wife Killers-R-Us convention ...."
But at least the rest of them aren't getting awards for their successful murders, as Michael Schiavo...
You preach to the choir, and you will have mail in a moment...
Taking a murderous lie and putting it in granite does not render it into truth.
Obviously it was wrong to murder Terri. If you really believed it was right, you wouldn't have to start your post with a proven lie to justify her murder.
Why wouldn't they give him an award? If he had lost his case, it would have meant the exposure of the corruption of the FL guardianship program which is a bi-partisan scandal and "full-employment act" for the legal establishment. The legal profession gave Judge Greer an award, so surely both Schiavo and Felos are entitled to one for hanging tough too. Felos will no doubt be named "Ambulance Chaser of the Year" shortly.
