EASTON - Route 50 in Easton is open again after an early Friday morning accident caused it to be closed for more than eight hours.
Route 50 from Matthewstown Road to Chapel Road was temporarily closed to traffic in both directions after an accident that happened at around 2:30 a.m. It reopened at around 11:30 a.m. The Easton police say a tractor trailer crossed the median and hit 13 unoccupied parked cars at the Holiday Inn Express. As a result, 80 gallons of fuel spilled out onto the motel's parking lot. The truck caught on fire and one of the unoccupied parked cars it hit-which was a brand new model- did as well.
Easton Fire Department Lt. Jamie McNeal said in addition to the new car and the truck that were destroyed, other vehicles hit were totaled as well.
"I'd say at least four of them were totaled," McNeal said. "One car was completely underneath the cab of the tractor trailer when we arrived on the scene, nine other cars were sandwiched like an accordian."
Easton Fire Chief Tim Knotts noted that the owner of the brand new car had specifically parked it at the end of the parking lot to avoid it getting scratched. Instead, all that is left of it and the truck is a charred mess. Nobody- including the driver- was seriously hurt.
The Easton police believe the tractor trailer driver had fallen asleep at the wheel. The crash also caused two large utility poles to be brought down onto Route 50 and utility officials worked to replace them. There were no reports from Delmarva Power of any power outages in Talbot County.
The Maryland Department of Environment also responded to the scene to help contain the fuel that spilled out.
It didn't get scratched. A carbeque is not a scratch.
The owner of the car can still say he stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
If the hotel had an on site nightclub could you say the car died in a Disco Inferno?
I was just looking around some maps and I believe the Wye Plantation is near where that accident happened. Didn't Clinton have one of his failed ME summits there?
I can see the Wye summit now: Clinton: You fellas just gotta git along. Mid East officials: Wye?
But, yes, Clinton was there, along with a lot of other people over the years. One of the attractions of the Wye Plantation is that it isn't really close to anything exciting, so you stay on the plantation.
"Holiday Inn Express"
Where are all the jokes?
I made a lame attempt at one.
Thank GOD no-one was in one of those vehicles!
I wonder what "caused" the accident - mechanical failure, driver asleep (my suspicion), etc.
OK - strike that - I just finished the article - DUH....
Driver WAS asleep.
Yes, Clinton HAS besmirched our pristine countryside.
Couldn't be helped.
Seems like everywhere he went he left skid marks. If ya know what I mean?
Everyone is very fortunate no one was seriously injured....cars, even brand new ones can be replaced.
Good grief - I can only imagine the tempers rising in that traffic mess.............the major route to the beaches shut down on a Friday morning in August.......YIKES.
