Said Harrison, the University of Hanford's president: ''As a national association, we believe that mascots, nicknames or images deemed hostile or abusive in terms of race, ethnicity or national origin should not be visible at the championship events that we control.''

Then the NCAA will be removing the N from its name, since it is so nationalistic. Right?

What about the MN Vikings?

I think we'll be pretty good. LOL

As for the subject of the thread, wasn't it reported elsewhere that Florida State is already saying it will sue the NCAA?

Isn't Connecticut derived from an Indian word? And think of all the rivers and cities!

Mississippi and Missouri will have to be re-named.

How does the name "Florida State Seminoles" demean American Indians? To me the name honors them. The teams aren't using them as a "mascot" but rather invoking the spirit of ferocity in battle that so many Indian tribes inspire.

. The most ironic thing is that the Native Americans around here don't really care about the nickname(s).

And yet liberal fraud Ward Churchill continues to make a complete mockery of Native American culture over in Boulder CO and the PC police not only tolerate his antics, they lionize him and ignore the protests of native Americans who are outraged by him.

If "Utes" is unacceptable, then why is Utah" okay, since it derives from the same root? Maybe they should be required to change the name of the state......as well as Indiana, Illinois, Oklahoma, Massachussetts, etc., etc....

" Let me get this straight. They're saying that Illinois teams can't call themselves the Illini? "

Again, if "Illini" is "incorrect," then so is "Illinois."

Maybe they should call the themselves the Orange Free State, or the "Dick Durbin Donkeys."

Isn't there some NCAA rule that bars Mississippi schools from hosting any NCAA tournaments because of the State flag?

Welcome to NCAA tyranny!!!!!!

Yes. But it is a weak and supremely illogical rule. Remember, it's the NCAA we're talking about. They're ONLY principles are a fierce inconsistency and fatuous preference for political correctness.

For instance, Ole Miss can host super-regional NCAA baseball tournament games because these games don't take place at 'prearranged' or 'predetermined' sites, whereas a Mississippi school can't host NCAA basketball tourney games, as happened last year when MSU had to travel to Birmingham to play a home game in the Coaches v. Cancer classic.

The NCAA's policy on this count is ridiculous any way you look at it.

I know a few Ute Indians and they all think its COOL to have a football team named after them. Kind of like having an aircraft carrier named after you or something...

To say the commuty there is not friendly to the Ute Indians is an utter joke. As far as I know it the name of the school team was named somewhat in honor of the friendships created even. In fact the word Utah itself is a representation of the Indian Tribe in question. Guess we gotta change the name of the state too now.

In fact I would even go so far as to say about half of the population there knows something about Ute Indians as in about cultural awareness etc...this to me is just rediculous.

Its about like having someone name their firstborn after you, but then you getting offended over it. (Go watch a game at Utah and you will see what I mean about 'first born')

Somehow I don't think the majority of Ute Indians in Utah are in on complaining about this one.

IIRC, I thought some Alcorn official said the Braves nickname was "insensitive" and had begun the process of looking for a new name. So, maybe not.

I'll ask a pal that went to Alcorn if my memory is correct and (more importantly) if there is any outrage of the proposed name change or the NCAA's criticism. He'll know what's up.

Also, I wonder what the Choctaw Nation's stand on the Mississippi College nickname is? I'm having trouble seeing Chief Martin being offended by the nickname.

Seems like I remember Chief Martin NOT being offended
by it. But don't make a large wager on my memory.

In keeping with political correctness, the UC Santa Cruz mascot was changed years ago to the "squiggle" and is drawn with a red pen in a squiggle. This was done deliberately to avoid this issue that can occur with ANY mascot if you take the position that the mascot must absolutely offend NO ONE. How insane and devious PC is, because you can't please all the people all the time. When are we going to stand up, get some back bone, and say, "Get Over It"?

The NCAA flexed it's misguided PC agenda by preventing any playoffs in any state that had the Confederate Battle Flag in the State Flag or that where the flag was honored by that state. The crowd bowed to them and the liberals slapped them on the back for attacking history. Now the NCAA is going after the Native American names and expecting more of the same PC bs by the media and the liberals.

To those that supported the PC attacks against the Southern heritage it will become apparent; it is not going to stop there and what one holds dear will be next. The NCAA has no business experimenting with PC topics, their job is to organize and keep the college athletic programs honest and in line with the sports' rules.
